Oh squeeful - they are building Ankh Morpork in Second Life!

http://slurl.com/secondlife/Ankh%20Morpork/137/111/25

It's annoying my PC doesn't have the specs to run SL successfully. If no-one's going to build a Ankh Morpork Adventure Park (I would, as discussed earlier, if I had the money) then Second Life is the next best thing. I'll just have to wait for a better PC before I rush off and join the Assassins Guild. I like the concept  of SL, but don't want to have to spend money, and it seems like that is inevitable if you want a shop or something. I'd love to do book readings or something there, it'd be cool.

Watched Farinelli - Il Castrato today, I was dreading that it might have horrid scenes of castration but it was nicely handled (if you know what I mean.) The script was pretty crappy, and Riccardo's performance was a bit bleh - but it was a rather sumptuous film and great for inspiration. I didn't find any slash in it, though and believe me I really really wanted to because the actor playing Farinelli was TO DIE FOR, and you know me, I can normally find slash in anything.  But no. However, it was the sort of film that makes you rush off to the net to research and see what his life was really like.  The music and costumes were simply gorgeous although I would have liked to have know what they were singing - the pieces, I mean, not necessarily the words. If you liked Amadeus, you'll love Farinelli.

I've been playing Second Sight today too, which I'm still really enjoying although it's getting more difficult - as games tend to do!  I watched a few YouTube videos to help me through some levels and they didn't help AT ALL - because they were filmed by BLOKES who simply play so so differently to me.  What I tend to do is to find somewhere safe to hole up, then use my "Projection" (which creates a second invisible copy of me) - send that copy off to see what the dangers are - then when I find them I possess the guards and kill all the other guards.  What BLOKES tend to do is just run in, all guns blazing, the narrative on one of the youtube videos was "so you just kill this guy, then run forward and kill all this lot..." (ad infinitum)  I wish I had the first clue how to take a video from the TV and put it on the PC - as people would have a good giggle at my gameplay.  But hey. It works, and I use literally NO ammo.  Yes, yes, I know - none of you have played it, so you have no clue what I'm on about... *wanders off, unloved*

So, no writing today, as you can tell.
Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today! Adopt one today!

Did you hatch an invisible dragon?

[identity profile] erastes.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
If they get sick (soft shell is one problem) it's because too many people viewed them too quick, so you can "fog" them for a while to help matters.

I know, I know... It's stupid....

[identity profile] lee-rowan.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
It's not stupid, but it is confusing. Where's the 'how to?" I'm happy to click (overdeveloped nurturing streak, I guess) but I don't want to upset the little beasts.

There's a forum which is linked from the main page (where it says "get your own") which has a lot of info on it - but (being the sort who never reads any instructions before setting up equipment or launching into a new game) I haven't bothered to go over and look - I've just picked up some info from others as I've gone along. It's pretty basic, try and collect as many different types as you can. I'd like to be able to swap eggs with friends, or breed dragons with others but I guess the programme isn't up to that. I'll get bored eventually - getting an egg now is becoming difficult and highly competitive - they are mainly hatched on the hour and it's like some mad sale.

What are you doing up so early?

[identity profile] lee-rowan.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 08:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm up so late. Got an Oct 1 deadline (self-imposed) for Winds of Intrigue and I've got Will reading Davy's letters (that he was too stubborn to open) and beating himself up for being a dolt. Which he was. I wish I could write in normal daytime hours.

Ankh-Morpork is tempting, but if I started playing video games I would never get another word written--email and LJ are distraction enough already.

"What I tend to do is to find somewhere safe to hole up, then use my "Projection" (which creates a second invisible copy of me) - send that copy off to see what the dangers are - then when I find them I possess the guards and kill all the other guards."

Yes, indeedy. If I hadn't already known you were a Scorpio, that would say it all.

I know which is one reason I'm not unhappy that my PC can't deal with the programme. I'll content myself with the Discworld video games which are fine but finite.

Heh, thanks hun. I suppose men get a kick out of running in all guns blazing but I find it much more satisfying (and sickly amusing) to get one of the gun to fire one bullet at one of his comrades, and there to be an enusing gun battle that I can hear from where I'm hiding....

*evil chortle*

I got a job.

Yes, in SL.

I'm a saleslady for a successful Asian-themed business. So, yes, now I have cash. Of course, I also live in a castle with two of my closest friends. You might say my second life is charmed.

[identity profile] erastes.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 08:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, a job is probably the best way - I couldn't find where to look - I didn't give it long enough, but my PC simply handle the graphics - so maybe when I get a new one, I'll try again. I would like to explore Ankh.

Alas, we haven't any openings, but I'll see what I can do if/when you do want to come in-world. :-)

The music from Farinelli is (or was) available on a French CD (Alia Vox, I'm pretty sure - but I'm not at home to check for a few days). So if you looked that up on the net you should be able to identify the tracks. No Handel (alas) as I recall, because in London F worked for the Other Company, but quite a bit of Hasse and other composers of the Extremely Florid.

Are these dragons going to be born, or what? This "will die in..." is ominous!

[identity profile] erastes.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 08:33 am (UTC)(link)
Oh that's a shame, because he did sing some Handel in the film - I'll have to see if I can buy or download the soundtrack.

Yes, I think I'll have four successful hatchings this time, as I have plenty of hits. Phew. I've lost one baby already and dont want to lose any more!

[identity profile] leni-jess.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
If he did sing some Handel in the film, that'll be on the CD, I expect - can't recall how they managed to include it, since I saw the movie years ago.

[identity profile] erastes.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
He stole one of Handel's operas from him, and then staged it at the rival company which caused a lot of bad feeling in the audience until he started to sing. Then Handel came backstage and said he would never write another opera as long as he lived because F. had stolen his inpsiration. I like that the rivalry wasn't healed. I don't know what it was like in real life, I will have to do some research - perhaps there's a book there somewhere.

I know there's an official soundtrack for Farinelli and I've seen it pop up in film score communities a few times -- I can send you a link if I see one. And Stefano Dionisi is beautiful in that film, isn't he?

[identity profile] erastes.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
That would be great - thank you so much.

And he's just gorgeous. Those eyes!

[identity profile] tammylee.livejournal.com 2008-09-28 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Aw, my computer isn't good enough for second life either.

[identity profile] erastes.livejournal.com 2008-09-29 08:04 am (UTC)(link)
Mine can just about run it, but it freezes up and it takes about ten minutes to run 100 yards!
