Campaign: Save the words!

This link from Chris Smith:

The team says it can predict which words are likely to become extinct-citing "squeeze", "guts", "stick" and "bad" as probable first casualties.

Well, as far as I can see, the boys at Reading University need to read more gay porn because where would it be without those four words?

"Stick your cock in me," he gasped.  "I want you so bad."

John slid his cock inside, pushing deep within his guts, loving the squeeze of Bill's arse.

SIMPLES!

Hogwash.

As long as recipes use citrus juice, we will have "squeeze."

As long as there's testosterone, there will be 'guts.'

And .. 'bad?' With all the bad-ass 'bad-boys' and umpty copies of Michael Jackson's album (not to mention Weird Al's parody, Even Worse, which is actually much better?)

I'd look for an April 1 date on that article. And then I'd whack the team with a stick.

I think they need to get out more.

And read porn!

:)

And possibly get laid. Nobody who ever had a sex life would think those words unnecessary. >8-D

Maybe they mean those words as used colloquially?

In the US, people might refer to their boyfriend/girlfriend as "my main squeeze." That's already a bit passe, to be honest. And bad...well, perhaps in the Michael Jackson sense of the word.

Stick and guts, I'm not so sure about. Although I'd wager guts started off as a slang. Sounds like something out of a potboiler.

Just a thought, anyhoo.

I don't think so. I doubt that Reading University would be considering the US in the equation - or colloquialisms

I liked the way they confidently declared that the 'earliest surviving words' are I, thou, we, two, three and five. So if you get accidentally transported back 40,000 years, you'll be well set up to communicate, yes?

Yes! Chortles! All that research into the thee and thou speech will be worth it! I can do the rest with gestures and beads.

"Yeahhhhhh," said Nino, "I'm gonna squeeze the trigger of my gat and the bullet's gonna stick in your guts. It's gonna hurt real bad. Am I gettin' through, or do yez want some of my boys here to make an 'zample outta yez?"

Couldn't resist. *cough*

You're right. So, so, so right.

But gay porn! Women don't read that! Or write it! We're chaste little flowers who only have sexual thoughts when our husbands want us to have sex!

The only people who read/write gay porn-- assuming it exists-- are gay men, and because we're big hotshot manly academicy types, we're going to pretend they don't exist lest it look like we're too interested and that's saying
something about our sexuality. :P

I still remember someone on a gay porn site saying, "Women watch this stuff, too, yanno?" like it was some kind of great revelation. And I sat there thinking, "No shit, Sherlock."

There was this article in the SFC chronicle a while back; this lady journalist was baffled that the US Queer As Folk producers were baffled that mostly straight women watched their show - the journalist thought, "duh, hot". A guy wrote in, saying he found this amusing, as "women's sexuality doesn't work that way". 800 women signed an online petition to declare that yes, theirs did, and told the SFC chronicle so in another letter.

Also, the co-president of Focus Features on Brokeback Mountain - that man has obviously seen the light: I said to Ang, there's one core audience for the movie; he said, "oh yeah, right, the gay audience," and I said, "no, women."

Absolutely--granted I started cruising porn sites for *coughresearchcough* but I go there again for my own selfish needs. :) The one nice thing about writing gay porn for anthologies is that you get a copy of the anthology with 20 other stories in it!

I really don't get the "different sexuality" thing--do women really think that they are wired different? Someone said earlier on this thread that women have different emotional needs or expectations, or whatever it was and my chin hit the deck at that point.

Your example here clearly wins the internets.
