Research is a right pain sometimes. I've just spent two hours writing one sentence because I wrote "a woman, wearing a..." and stopped dead.  Then I had to go and research fashion, more particularly Italian fashion in 1933, which turned out to be not as simple as it appeared.  The depression AND fascism had influenced fashion a great deal.

Now I'm stuck again over something STUPID.  What's the thing called that you carry a mixture of cake around on?  You know, usually silver or plated, and has a handle and several stories?

ETA: CAKE STAND - I'm an idiot.  Thank you [livejournal.com profile] enolabloodygay

Well, I'd call it a cake stand.

The capital letters caught my eye before I read the rest of the post.

Of course I read "cake stand" as "cock stand."

Ah, but to be effective, it can only go so low... ;p

I hear ya on the research. I'm going nucking futz right now, myself.

Courage.

I was like that over 'the thing that measures the fares in a taxi'

A taxi meter!

GIGGLES

I'm glad it's not just me.

I'm totally with you on the research thing. I learned to put "blah blah" in there or I'll spend hours and lose momentum writing. Now I have a whole novel full of little stuff to research, but it's probably more efficient to do all at once, since it's mostly the same sources. We'll see how it works out this time around.

Hello. Can I just say that this is a great idea? I kind of knew this one, but I forget it over and over and let myself go down the research bunny trail on little things like the name of a garment, or an intersection.

So I appreciate the reminder. It's very liberating, isn't it, to just type in [research needed] or [thing] and then move the hell on.

I did that approach with a lot of Mere Mortals and put stuff like they spent the evening deep in discussion about [SOMETHING RELEVANT TO 1847] and although i need still to fill in the gaps, it meant i could finish a chapter without stopping for hours at a time, then getting tired and sidetracked.

I had a brain freeze like that this morning. Is Mercury going retro again?

For a fashion note like that, I'd probably put she was wearing a (hot Italian period fashion)and just go on, or the sentence would wither and die.

I think you are entirely right. I've written 1000 words in five days and most of it is stopping to research, as I've just reaslied how deep and wide the socio-political situtation was in Italy in 1933 (d'oh) so I'll do what i did for a lot of Mere Mortals and just put [SOMETHING] and come back to it, thanks hun!

TELL ME ABOUT IT. I have days where I write five words, look something up; five more words, look something up. Talk about annoying...

[identity profile] erastes.livejournal.com 2009-09-06 03:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I used the [INSERT SOMETHING HERE] method more and more these days. I hope i - and any beta catches them all before i send stuff out....

[identity profile] joannesopercook.livejournal.com 2009-09-06 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)
No, I'm too impatient for that sort of thing...I have to find it RIGHT NOW or else my head will explode brains all over the place.

It's a sickness. :D

You're using the [livejournal.com profile] c_smith_author method, eh? My personal fave is the XXX TRANSPORT DEVICE. LOL

Hee - yes - and as we've discovered, going through it together, often times it was a TARDIS.

:)

[identity profile] joannesopercook.livejournal.com 2009-09-06 03:42 pm (UTC)(link)
HAHAHAHHAH!

The mention of the TARDIS sort of reminds me of something new I've discovered about Insp. Raft. :)
