Severus is growing up.  When I first got him (can't believe it's nearly six months, can you?) he was uber clingy, and would kiss me all the time, rubbing his horrid wet face all over mine.

However, now, I suppose he's a teenager in cat years and he doesn't do that. I picked him up yesterday and he WRIGGLED to get away!!! *shocked*  He no longer sleeps with me either.  *sob*  I miss him.  But he's grown so much, bless him, he's twice Lili's size (but she can still beat him in a wrestle)

Did anyone see Mansfield Park yesterday?  Blech! No, that's not fair.  Ninety nine percent of the programme was OK, and the casting was pretty good, (but omg how old was Edmund? 12?)  But Billie Piper was wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong. She couldn't have been wronger if she'd been 60 years old male and black Fanny Price.

She wasn't given a wig - or indeed even a hair-do. She had Rose Tyler hair, and she never even brushed it.  It was loose on her shoulders all the time.  When she went out of the house, she didn't bother with a bonnet, even when riding. Everyone else had bonnets!  The hair was still that bleached yellow colour with black roots, and with the wonky parting that was fashionable a year or so back.  Call me Ms Shallow but it ruined the whole thing for me.  That and the fact that she isn't gentil and can't play Austen. Sorry Billie.

Oh I taped Mansfield Park because I had high hopes, or rather hopes. Is she that bad in it? Still, it's got to be better than that awful film version from about 1994, doesn't it?

It's a shame because everyone else is pretty good, they just all look a bit embarrassed for her, being Rose, waiting for the Doctor to come back and get her.

Ha! I might watch it with that in mind: it's actually a Doctor Who crossover and I'm just waiting for David Tennant to appear!

I watched most of it and mostly kept thinking nah it´s not as good as the film. Which is a sad thing to do, but I found most of the actors considerably sub par here. When you´ve had James Purefoy be all drunk and sweaty as Tom Bertram, who needs this boy (pretty as he is, and I remmeber him fondly from Master and Commander). When you´ve had Jonny Lee Miller do Edmund with his "I have a stick up my arse and it needs some twisting", why do you need this blushing young thing? At least the film got the ending right. As well as, you know, Harold Pinter with considerably more gravitas as Sir Thomas, Lindsay Duncan as the indolent Lady Bertram rather than that scheming lady, and all those chavvy young things as the Crawfords! I thought Billie Piper was the best of it, and that´s saying a lot. And don´t even get me started on the anachronisms. *fumes*

Um, anyway. The least they could have done is some moments of "brotherly" embraces and debauchery.

Oh you should. It´s considerably more faithful to the book, and although there are some differences, the characterisation at least is something they get right. And, you know, Jonny Lee Miller and James Purefoy and Giovanni Ribisi in the same film. And Mary Crawford being actually interesting and compelling as a character. And some use of the Orientalist subtext of the novel.

It´s from 2000, I think, with Frances O´Connor as Fanny. Not great, but not bad for an Austen adaptation. Certainly an entertaining film. :)

Not that I´m a Romanticist or anything. ;)

Severus, all growed up. *sniffs*

When you told me they were casting Billie Piper in an Austen film, I thought you were joking me. You'd think at least they could have dealt with her hair and put her in a bonnet. Sounds awful.

Just dropping in to say hi.
I've just friended you (hope that's okay). I'm an alarmingly-ancient English woman and I write slash in the HP fandom. Is your kitty named after Snape? (looks hopeful).
I'm currently reading Standish and enjoying it very much, despite the angst! I never do that in my stories.
My granny came from Norfolk! great county!
For myself, I am a Fen-dweller *glub*.
so HI!

Hello and welcome! I'm friending you back because I like Old Slashers (although I can't believe you are as old as me...!)

Very happy you are enjoying Standish! I look forward to hearing your thoughts.

And yes, I have Severus and Lucius moggies, and they love each other madly (it was my OTP in fandom) I used to be [livejournal.com profile] underlucius but that was a year ago and fandom moves on!

Ah the fens. Full of dykes, I hear?

Ah the fens. Full of dykes, I hear?

*GROAN* Actually along our lightly-populated Fen Road there are two households of gay couples (male) but no dykes apart from the watery, black-muddy kind.

Well, I suppose you had to do it, it was a pun just screaming to be let loose...

I bet I am as old as you too - in fact I'm probably older! I'm 50 in August. Fossilised! I keep thinking we should have a Fossilised Fanfic Writers' group. I know a few ff writers older than me, but VERY few.
I've only been doing it for 2 years though (I used to lead a sheltered life, ROFL).

[livejournal.com profile] underlucius? now that rings a bell. I'm not sure why (I have a sievelike brain) but I think I ought to. Fandom does indeed move on. Doesn't everything? Who am I to moan if the Earth moves? Never!

*G*

My only real claim to fame was [livejournal.com profile] hp_literotica

But I stole Lucius and replaced him with a metamorph who will be in the 7th book. She's not having him back, either.

I like the sound of a wrinkly writers group. You are (just) older than me. We also have aunty_marion, RWDay, and various others who are over 40...

I don't know any of those, but I have these friends who're wrinkly: [livejournal.com profile] lilyeyes, [livejournal.com profile] gingertart50 and [livejournal.com profile] centaury_squill (the last two even older than me, squee!). These are those of 50 or very nearly. Then there's a ton more 40 somethings! So although when I started writing fic I felt very out of place (ff.net and its teeny writers, shudder) I'm brave enough to admit my age these days.

"Ninety nine percent of the programme was OK..."

Was it? I'm afraid I spent half of it hooting with laughter and shouting "eyebrows!" at Fanny Price, and the rest of the time loudly deploring ITV's decision to make souless costume dramas... I mean really. They should leave it to the BBC.

You were missed, Sir at the last CW meeting. *sniff*
x

Hello!

I agree with you, ITV just don't seem to do it particularly well. I am looking forward to Northanger Abbey though, I've never seen a version of that, and it's my favourite!

I know, I chickened out of the last 2 weeks of CW. I'm such a wuzz. I didn't get my story finished and didn't dare admit it!
