I started to watch Atonement last night. Beautiful to look at (apart from Kiera Knightley who makes me feel ill looking at her bones) but a tad self indulgent.  The Dunkirk scenes were amazing—and heartbreaking, shooting all the horses (*cries*) – will finish watching it tonight and post more thoughts then.

I’m not going to Dad’s today, as I feel utterly washed out and tired and a bit nauseous. Nothing much, just a general bleurghk.

I baked some spuds yesterday to use them up and put them out on the lawn, there’s a feeding frenzy going on.

Ok. going to stare at Guy and Louis as they do Noel Coward impressions and hope they start kissing soon and stop being to bloody brittle.

I thought that movie was great. Downers are my favorite. But I was never able to detect a relationship between the main characters. It seems like it's meant to be a tortured love story. I got the tortured part, but I never got the love part. They seemed devoid of chemistry to the point of being cold. Did they have a relationship and I missed it?

I wish someone would give poor Kiera a nice plate of spaghetti. If the camera adds 20 lbs... that's scary.

*giggles* yes - my father looks at her and says "the poor girl needs a pie or two." She's quite hideously skeletal in Atonement - she was ok in the pirates films. or perhaps it was because she had more clothes on

It's probably an english thing - although I'll comment more when I've watched the second hour - Teddypig was talking about Maurice the other day and saying how it didn't convince, but perhaps it's because some Americans just don't have that same clipped upper class repression of feelings that the english have? Where you can't actually SAY what you mean because it's not DONE. You'd think anyone who'd seen Brideshead, or Brief Encounter or Private Lives ... we are a weird bunch. :)

I thought the movie was excellent, but the ending (I'll warn you) left me standing in a crowded movie theater shouting "WTF Kind of ending is that? DIE! DIE! DIE!"

Ah, that brings to mind a quote from J.R. Ackerley: "Unable to love each other, the English turn naturally to dogs."

What they really needed to bring out all that hidden depth of feeling was a gregarious pet.

good lord - i'd have done the same. How utterly stupid - she didn't Atone at all - creating a happy ending for her sister and Robbie was worse than anything she could have done, it should have been called Denial. Or Atonement. Ur doin' it rong.

like that's a bad thing? I could have gay guys in my front yard doing improv if I'd just bother to throw cooked spuds out there?
