Oh Friends List please calm down. it’s not the end of the world, it’s just social networking. Surely there are more important things in life to get irate about like child abuse or cruelty to animals or floods or earthquakes or something GOOD you could be doing and not whining about whether someone copies your posts into another forum? If you have people who will deliberately post your private stuff in public then they aren’t your friend, and basically, they could have done it at any point before now. Nothing to stop anyone copying private material and posting it in public. Wrong, yes. Doable, definitely. If you are telling me you’ve never shared a juicy bit of flocked gossip with someone who wouldn’t know about it otherwise, then I’ll stare in amazement and hand you a halo.

As to the FB/Twitter button, that’s easily removed by downloading Greasemonkey and using this plug in. http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/85105  It works immediately and lo and behold you can simply press enter again without having to skip.

As for me? I very rarely friends lock, and it’s usually because I want to have a personal whine about me, which I think most people won’t be interested in. I don’t give a rat’s arse if you post your comments on my LJ on your FB/Twit page – although why on earth would you want to, and who the hell would be interested?

In other news, I finally read my first Josh Lanyon book The Dark Farewell, and really liked it!  I shall read more of you, Lanyon, so be warned! :D

I think it looks dorky on my comments page, but otherwise, since I don't facebook and my lj is firmly friendslocked due to an unfortunate encounter with a coworker who read my lj and got miffed by something I said, I figure it's not going to come up. I hope.

Josh Lanyon is awesome. I actually haven't read The Dark Farewell, but I have it. I totally loved the Adrien English Mysteries. But everything he writes grabs you and drags you in. And he's a lovely person. Comment on his LJ and he'll reply.

Erastes, I'm honestly glad that you have nothing to worry about if the content in your LJ is made more public. But a lot of people, especially women, have legitimate concerns if the information in their journals were to start showing up on random Facebooks and Twitter feeds. Any woman who has been stalked could tell you that an obsessed ex sometimes only needs a few clues about your location to track you down. Any fan who has been outed to an employer could tell you that the loss of their livelihood is a very real possibility if that employer considers writing slash "immoral conduct." It's not about gossip. It's about survival.

As would I. With my mind the way it is lately, I can honestly say that I don't remember having ever disseminated any flocked gossip.

Ok. You can stop staring now. Ummm, stop staring please...

OMG YES.

I didn't realize that it didn't copy your post--I thought it really did that until I investigated and then I was like, "But....anyone could c/p their comment if they wanted...?"

It's a mystifying feature, but...don't use it. The end!

(Although the script only works for Firefox, I believe.)

You're very welcome. As you can see, since it's apparent no halos are forthcoming, I have provided my own. Feel free to share. *g*

Personally I couldn't care less if people post their comments on my posts to facebook, but then I don't share deeply personal stuff online - that's strictly for the friends who really know me. And I won't repost my comments there, because who would be interested?

And Josh Lanyon is awesome, isn't he? I thoroughly recommend the Adrien English mysteries. Compelling stuff.

My point is that people could copy and disseminate that information at any time, that's all. If you have unpleasant people who want to be malicious, they could out you before now.

Sorry you felt you had to defriend because of this.

You are a better man than me, Gungadin. Mea Culpa, I've been guilty of it occasionally, sharing with friends.

I'm very impressed. Halo for you too. Not even with Charles? Never told him anything from a flocked post?

I appreciate that people may post things they don't want others to know, but perhaps they should realise that the internet isn't safe, and that if someone wants to share that info with family, friends, facebook, employers, there's nothing to stop them.

I was impressed! I have so much reading to do for SIN, and the AE series is contemp, I believe, but I'll try his other historicals, that's for sure.

I love Josh Lanyon's stuff. I just finished reading the last in the Adrien English series and the first in the Holmes/ Moriarity series. I still have a fantasy one to go. His short story collections are good, too, if you just want a quick read.
::hugs books::

My point is that these changes make it easier for outing to happen, whether by malice or by accident. Everyone needs to determine their own personal risk level when participating in online socializing and take the appropriate precautions, and I don't think that people who decide that their risk level is high deserve to be dismissed or mocked by people who have decided that their own risk is negligible.
