(earlier)Going to cook today, instead of going out. I know I should want to go somewhere, but I’m just tired. I’m going to make chopped toad. Now, there’s a challenge for you non-English types. What on earth is chopped toad? And then fruit crumble—if I can get Dad interested enough to go and buy a bottle of cava and some custard we will be in for a pretty perfect dinner imho.

ETA: OK – so it wasn’t exactly perfect. Remind me not to do birthdays with Dad in future – it’s self defeating, and only makes me miserable. I’d be better off going somewhere alone next time. Food was nice though!  And now I have the evening to myself, and have all the kind wishes to reply to – you are all so kind – and some good tv to watch. Downton Abbey being one – it’s the penultimate one. *sob*

I'm so sorry that your birthday wasn't at all what you would have liked, even with the chopped toad. :(

But I would like to wish you Happy Birthday anyway!

If "toad in a hole" is sausage inna bun, I'm assuming the mangled beastie is some kind of sausage mince? Sorry your Dad wasn't up to celebrating. I'm sure if his wiring was still intact he'd have been able to join in. Happy comfy night at home, anyway!

Thank you - silly of me to put so much store on birthdays, but they've always been a special day.

Heh, no - it's chops (generally pork chop) covered in batter mix and baked. Toad in the hole ISN'T sausage inna bun - for shame, you Anglophile you.

This is Toad in the hole.

so chopped toad is simply chops instead of sausage.

The US version of that is 'breaded pork chops."

Re the holey toad--someone told me it was sausage wrapped and baked in dough--so I thought 'wrapped' as in 'surrounded,'

The real thing looks nicer than described. Are all 'toad' dishes some sort of pig-parts, then?

my TINH is more covered in the batter than this - and soggier, I don't like it too crispy.

I don't know of other versions, but I guess you can do it with anything meat like! If i could get really thick lamb chops that would be good too.
