ebooks have ruined my joy of reading.
Apr. 4th, 2011 09:01 amI'm sorry ebook lovers but they really, really, have. I have more than 30 books in my TBR pile, and that's just for Speak Its Name. Now, if I had 30 paperbacks sitting next to my bed I'd like like a pig in muck, and I'd see them daily, and my mouth would water at the anticipation of getting to this particular one or that particular one.
But with ebooks they are hidden away on the PC. I have to click and click from start up just to work out which ones I've got, and then I don't know which ones I got first.
Then to read them?
I'm a bedtime/bathtime reader. I have been all my life. With the few exceptions (the new HarryPotters, George Martin, Jim Butcher) where I set aside a Saturday to sit on the couch all day and read I have a long, hot leisurely bath, read and read and read—then I go to bed and read until I'm too tired to read any more. But with the PC I can't DO this. I have to either sit on an office chair and read or crouch over the laptop. It's NOT comfortable and it's NOT pleasureable. The PDF's are wider than my eyes like and I have to move my head back and forth—and if I shrink the script down so I don't do that, it's too small to read.
I can hear you saying: "Get an e-reader then," and as much as I hate the word I want to snarl "shut up with your privilege" (which I won't say, because I loathe it when someone says that to me). I DID buy an android reader a last year and it became a brick within weeks because it got a little bit wet. (No I didn't take it to bed.) as a carer, I earn £60 a week. There is no way in hell I can afford a reader until they drop drastically and/or crappy second hand ones appear as people upgrade—this is me and phones, after all!
and i'm bitter! I'm jealous when everyone raves about their ereaders and ipads and androids! I'm a real gadget freak and if I was earning proper money I'd be getting myself one—it just makes me green to the gills that people have an ipad2 and I haven't even got a bloody Kindle.
So I think the only way out of this dilemma, where I'm not reviewing as many books as I need to because they are all ebooks is to start asking authors for paper copies and hoping I can find reviewers for the ebooks—because damn it, i MISS READING!!!!
