Now, they look like hugely fat books but this is because--utterly bizarrely--they are printed in double spacing—like the electronic copy or fanfic. Now while I don't mind double spacing in my e-books, because it is easier on the eyes, i really DON'T want it in my print books. It looks like a Large Print edition you get in the library for sight impaired people, or a kid's book. and the spine is awful, you can hardly see the title! Every book I own has the writing going from top to bottom OR standing upright. This one runs from bottom to top, so when you put them in a pile or on the shelf its opposite to everyone else or upside down.
It's not pretty and I do apologise in advance if you bought it and didn't like the layout—I had no idea they were going to be laid out like that.
There's also – really bizarrely—no Table of Contents despite the fact that it's an anthology—and the stories have no gaps between them, AND at the top of every single page it says: Erastes, Chris Smith, Charlie Cochrane, Jordan Taylor—Last Gasp, so you can't even find the stories by just opening a page at random. You have to hunt through to find the beginning of the stories.
Look – I know it's bad form to post about things in the open, but I couldn't not. People might think I approved this layout, as I was the chooser of the stories (there's no mention of that either.) I would certainly have asked for things to be done very differently. You can't just take a PDF for an ebook and use that to format a print book.
So, yes. Not very happy with them, I'm afraid.Compared with how beautifully designed Mere Mortals is, it's embarrassing.
