Most of you know already with my fanfiction journal, but I wanted to put it officially here, as this journal is embedded on my website.

I sold my book! "Standish" a homoerotic love story set in 1820 has been accepted by PD Publishing - and they've sent me the contract to check over.

Now - the thing is - I have an agent waiting in the wings, who told me that if PD accepted me, he would jump in and negotiate for me. But I don't know if I want to bother with him. On the Con (heh heh) side, he would charge me commission on my (probably negligible) profits and I am not over eager because ... well, to take on an author AFTER they've done all the hard work to get published seems rather cheeky.

on the Pro side - He will know the business, and might be able to negotiate a good deal, when I wouldn't know a good deal if it bit me on the nose. Plus - he would do the pimping for me to bigger publishers if I get better known (hee hee)

so... does that mean that agents are all cons? or pros? (rofls)

I think you know that I have mixed feelings on this too - it will cut into your profits, and if you don't take an advance, you'd probably have to pay the agent up front out of your own funds. You've done all the work, after all, and it goes against my grain to pay someone for doing nothing. It's not like you don't know lawyers you can ask about the contract.

On the other hand, if allowing this agent to represent you will establish an ongoing relationship, that could be a Very Good Thing. If the agent is any good, of course. Do you know any of his other clients? Wondering if they're known at all.

I guess for me, one deciding factor would be whether the agent would be 'yours' from this point on, or if this is a one-shot just for Standish and the reputation of the agent in your field.

Not a lot of help, I know, but I'm Miss Indecisive myself, so that's about par for the course.

Hmm. I wouldn't go for it, really. You've done a good enough job in finding a publisher on your own, and I think you're more marketable based on your publishing history as opposed to what an agent would say to a prospective publisher (I suppose he can help, yep, but I think you'd do more on your own by virtue of your success; that could be a very naive take on things, however, since I've never been too keen on hiring agents to begin with).

Nods, I am tending to come down on that side of the fence - I'm going to be earning so little it hardly seems worth it - when I'm coining it like JKR - that's another matter (ha ha ha!!)

Thank you!
