Someone on the Historical Research Society asked me today if I had a blog about Gay Historical Fiction because they'd like to read it and I suddenly realised that I couldn't point them here, because - well, there's a lot of very random stuff what with the writerly and the memes and fandom musing and general rubbish.

So today I've created THIS which is going to be dedicated purely to Gay Historical Fiction, and I hope - think - that it's a unique place!  Just reviews up there at the moment, reviews I've posted on my LJ etc, but I hope soon to get articles, opinions, interviews etc.

If you are a fan of the genre and have written or would like to write some reviews please get in touch. If you want to write an article, serious, geeky, humorous, whatever, get in touch.

Now I just need a decent banner....*puppy eyes* anyone with photoshop skillz???  It has to be same size as the one there at the moment...

I can't tell you how grateful I'd be.

I was sort of thinking "Speak its Name" in flourishy quill like writing, and then a muted blurry or sepia type image of two men kissing.

I've never been able to find anything with men in period costume kissing but if you knew anything like that that would be fine, but half naked would be fine, as long as they didn't look obviously modern.

I don't know how I'd repay you other than with squee.

What about something like this?

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

I couldn't find an image of men kissing that I liked, but I did find some images of male torsos in scans of old anatomy books.

James Spada's "Edwardian Men" series of photographs are rather lovely. No period costumes (heh) but period settings. I don't know if there would be copyright issues, however.

Yeah, that's why I went with the scans of the old anatomy books, no copyright infringement. ^_^

I hear you. What about von Gleoden's photos from the 1920s? They're public domain, I think. No kissing, but nice period feel. http://vongloedengayhistory.free.fr/
A favorite: the third "il Moro" picture. Mmm.

The World History of Male Love site is a wonderful resource, and includes this lovely and famous drawing by Bartolomeo Cesi from the 16th century.

I've written a review for Discreet Young Gentleman (I think you've seen it), but I need to edit it before sending it to you. :) There are also about three gay historical books I never got to review (well, I reviewed one of them, but it was posted in my defunct blog, so that's no use), and I can write them for the new site. :)

That's wonderful, I was going to ask you, but I know how busy you are - I would love your input!

Can't wait to put GOD'S FALLING on it!

Do I need to create an account in order to post a review? Or should I just forward it to you, and you'll do the posting?

Lord, I need a publisher for my baby first!

I've got you blogrolled. (http://quirky-hausfrau.blogspot.com) :-)

What are you looking for in a banner?

I'm still struggling to work out how it all works, it's not easy...but a little easier than Blogspot, I think.

Cynbaby's done me one, but I'd LOVE a selection to rotate with, if you feel inspired to have a go. Something tasteful and period - there's literally no pictures of gay men in costume snogging on the net (that I've every found, anyway)

something LIKE this..

*g* Well I have this for the moment, which is not at all what you asked for:

but I'll certainly look out for some naval slashy pictures. Possibly something could be done with the one in my icon, if I can find it again :)

Hee! I'm really glad you like it :) As you say, there just don't seem to be any nice pictures of men in period costume kissing, so I thought I'd look at a period where I *knew* there was gay art to be had, and then do more researching later :)

Thank you!

Hi hun

Do you still have a copy of this? I wanted to use it, and I didn't keep a copy...

Halp!

Naval slashy, you say? How about this (http://www.squidge.org/~praxisters/hh/gundeck.html) from the Theban Band site?

In my excitement over concupiscent browsing for a banner motif I neglected to say what a terrific idea the new site is. Congratulations!

I'm on a spate of historical reading myself. The Price of Temptation (M.J. Pearson); The Master of Seacliff (Max Pierce) (amalgam of Rebecca and Gaywick and Wuthering Heights); W.A. Hoffman's Raised by Wolves Series; Street Lavender (Chris Hunt); Lee Rowan's Age of Sail books, and on and on. Such FUN!!

Also, I've begun research for a new historical project set in early-contact Canada (17th C.) with French and Huron protags, so having a site full of inspiring reviews and such will be welcome!

Thank you - it needed doing, I think.

I've read all of those except Street Lavender, so I'll look forward to your views on them...

Project sounds interesting!

Great blog! I've bookmarked it for later perusal. ;)

Just wanted to drop in and say hi. I followed you over here from fandom_tossed over on GJ.

I'm a writer as well. I'll have my second short story published next month on the e-zine Written Word. It's a gay historical entitled "Lil's Boy."
