How annoying is Amazon at times? Yes. Very. I wanted to go and buy Josh Lanyon & Sarah Black's Partners in Crime 2 because there's a story from the 1940's in it (and one from the 1960's which I thought I could stretch into the "historical" definition for Speak its Name and the paperback is EIGHTEEN POUNDS. Yes. That's 36 dollars ladies and gents. For a PAPERBACK. Granted they have shipping costs from the States, but STILL. I know what the postage is, so do you, and it's not that mark-up price for every book.

So I'm going to have to buy it from Fictionwise, which annoys me greatly. It's a fraction of the price (about Five or six pounds for both books) but they will be ebooks, and not nice paperbacks that I'll read over and over again. That's the price of a hardback, Amazon!!

Grrrr.

In other news - Two pieces of news about "Where the Boys Are" the anthology that my short "Drug Colours" is in. A really lovely review of my story from Erotica Revealed HERE, (the reviewer considers it one of the best of the book... *blush *) and I've just noticed that Cleis have nominated it for the Lambdas. It doesn't have a hope in hell, as there's hefty opposition from The Mammoth Book of Gay Erotica and Homosex - but w00t! It's still nice to be in another nominated book.

The price could be set by the publisher, rather than amazon. Small press stuff tends to be more expensive, some of it quite a lot so.

Evidently MLR is quite expensive I'm told, but I'm still surprised at the price, RWDay's book couldn't have a smaller publisher but that's not such a huge gap, neither is STandish. It's a shocking mark-up. Shocking!

One of the ways I've got round this is to do a swap with friends in the US; they buy reasonably priced books/whatever and mail them - cheaply - to me and I respond in kind with books/CDs that they need. If the book is miles cheaper in the US you could employ a similar arrangement?

MLR Press has good titles but it's a bit expensive. Still, they are publishing some very interesting book.

I forgot to sign for your historical list The Ardennian's Boy by William Maltese and Wayne Gunn: it's the revised biography of Rimbaud and Verlaine, it's a mix of prose and poems... is it OK for your list?

Now that's weird, I thought that WAS on the list - I've got a copy of it and one of my reviewers is supposed to be reviewing it. I couldn't read it myself, the first couple of chapters revolted me with all the rape and the sperm.

I buy a lot of the US print-on-demand stuff from BD; it's cheaper and has better availability than Amazon.

I treated myself to Josh's 1940s story as a Loose-ID e-book and it's great; one of his best. Very sad. Sniff. But in a good way.

Mine is coming Friday (I hope!!) but I was going to suggest the trade thing too. I used to buy books for a friend in New Zed because they were expensive if they could be found. Shipping for media mail was less than regular and for two or three books nothing like what the companies charge!

Well the temp is dropping here finally, today's high was half of yesterday's. Woohoo! If I can have just one chance to wear my nice dramatic coat I'll be happy; though I'll probably have a tanktop on underneath! ^_^

Bad Amazon indeed. I tried to buy 'Standish' back in November, but they couldn't deliver it for about 3 weeks and it was part of an order that I needed for someone else's birthday. I had to cancel it. *scowls*. Thank you for reminding me, though. Must have another go.
