Remember that to broach something is to open or introduce it, whereas a brooch is an ornament

Use lightening if you mean 'making lighter', and lightning if you mean 'thunder and lightning'.

GRRR. I can't tell you how many times I've seen the above mistakes in the last couple of weeks

Pet peeves, eh?

Now, see, I didn't know that. I've never seen the word "broach" before. I've heard it used, but I've never seen it--it's always been written as "brooch," even in printed books. I figured it was one of those words that are spelled the same but that are pronounced differently...like "close" and "close," for example.

I just checked the dictionary. "Broach" is correct. Thank you. I learned something new today.

I did a beta this weekend, and found, among other things, abstinent instead of obstinate.

I love English. I was pondering the other day on the meanings of "partial".

It took me years before I pronounced "brooch" correctly; I'd only seen it written. "Ascertain" was the same way. Interestingly, I used ascertain, pronounced correctly, in speech. However, in reading, in my head, I always read it as "a-certain", even though I knew what it meant.

However, I am known for eccentric pronunciations. For example, I pronounce "Barry", "bury", and "berry" differently. Apparently I am the only person in the U.S. who does so. Sigh.

Aw - your LJ is a joy forever.

It's published books that have these errors that should be burned.

Or, more correctly, the editors of such.

I've seen broach used instead of brooch in two books in a week. I'd just had enough.

Hahah - I know, I was just jesting... I was just about to edit the comment and edit the ^^;; smiley XD.

Couldn't disagree more... although I am the first to admit that my public (not published thanks the Goddess) crimes against English, Japanese and Hebrew... and possibly Akkadian and Arameic... should have me executed in ALL those countries (I am trying to figure out how to get myself executed in Ancient Babylon right now >_<).

LOL Have you seen this clip on YouTube? I nearly wet myself watching it. I help teach a self-editing class at Rosescoloredglasses.com. I'm tempted to post it as required viewing for the next class.

Yes, I agree. But none of them can equal the horror which is the apostrophe used to indicate a plural. As in 'One puppy, five puppy's.' I see it everywhere, and you can't spend all your time tearing down signs and writing stiff letters to the editor.

We have a girl at work who sends around the daily bulletins and I could shoot her as she has no clue what an apostrophe is and how to use it.

Please save the coloured parking bay for client's.
