May I just go SPORK!!!! at this picture?

This was painted by someone who has never met a woman OR a horse in his LIFE.  If there's one thing you don't do on a leather saddle, is to wear a leather thong

And you would know this.... how?

HEY. Someone had to say it. ;)

Had horses for years - rode nude often, but NEVER with a saddle...

That getup reminds me of an old story...

Up in Valhalla, after a night of lusty revelry, the Thunder God awoke and turned to the comely Valkyrie beside him. He couldn't remember if he'd introduced himself the night before, so he said, in a friendly way, "Hi, I'm Thor."

"You're Thor!" she said. "Buthter, I'm tho thore I can hardly pith!"

Went out for a ride on his filly.
"I'm Thor!" he cried.
The filly replied:
"You forgot your thaddle, thilly."

Is it the fact that it's a thong, or that it's leather? *is confused* It seems like, either way, you're going to get rubbed raw.

Or a Valkyrie. They're supposed to be wearing armour, dammit!

Iron-thewed babes, clearly. Are you sure those are leather thongs? Perhaps they're metal, as those bra-caps appear to be... in which case, they must have serious padding somewhere. Maybe they're extra woolly, like these sheep.

Erm, I'm actually struggling with the location of those girth straps.
Every horse I ever encountered would kick you into next week if you tried to bang your buxom ass on his kidneys like that. Lacking stirrups, we're talking some serious banging there. Also, I'm afraid the muscle density on those women suggest they weigh more than the horses do.
As I'm sure you'd be able to critique in far more detail, I'll just mention the horse conformation is all wrong. Those aren't good sturdy Norse horses. Those are way too skinny and long-legged, too much thoroughbred blood there.
Oh yeah, and I believe those hooves are shod, and I'm pretty sure they shouldn't be.

I think this was the kind of thing that went through most reporters' heads when they heard the news stories of Viking women wearing metal bras. Unfortunately this is more the reality:

Actually, it was painted by someone who refuses to acknowledge what excessive boydbuilding does to women's boobs. ;-p

The talents of the arist are to be commended, his interpretations, however, are open for debade.

Agreed. Bare flesh and leather saddles do not make for an enjoyable ride.

It would appear our brave artist has used the Kentucky Derby and Barbie for his models. The women are too big for the horses. And last I recall, NO ONE rides with their knees bent and feet curled back underneath them. If those ponies stop fast, it would surely catapult the lusty ladies nose-over-teacups into the dirt.

No, it most likely isn't, though it's certainly closer than Leather Babe. That's a new interpretation based on a very limited sample of grave finds that's being posited by a scholar who is working towards a Ph.D. equivalent. She's going to be defending her findings at the next Northern European Symposium in Archaeological Textiles, and I fully expect her research to be strongly challenged, because there's 50+ years of textile and archaeological evidence supporting the more traditional interpretation - a sort of pinafore dress more like this.

Just from a practical perspective, that outfit is completely unrealistic for Norse women who would have led active lives. The most you could say about something like that was that it might have been ceremonial, or the outfit of a priestess. Those brooches have very large pins in them and would NOT be comfortable over the breasts like that - remember, there's no bra to provide cushioning. Bend down and those straps would probably slide right off.

Sorry to rant, but I'm on a number of re-enactment and scholarly lists about Norse/Viking culture Larsson's interpretation (the picture you posted) has been a hot, hot topic.

Oh, yes, the brooches are correct. Pairs of round or oval (or occasionally animal-head shaped) brooches are found all over Norse-influenced areas from the 7th to 9th centuries.

*g* Yes, I posted about this on my own journal a couple of days ago here, saying that there was no way that was a bra, and posting a piccie of our own society's take on Viking dress - I'm a re-enactor too. But the above, though highly unlikely, is still more likely than the valkyrie picture :) (And funnier).

Thanks! You can actually see the result of our re-think of the hangarok in this picture - the orange hangarok on the far left is old-style, with the separate front panel, and the purplish one next to it is the new version which is much more like yours. It was the mention of 'metal bras' that caused me to post the other one as a comment to these body-building Valkyries ;)

Oh, and the one in the front is holding her spear completely wrong!

The horsie conformation suggests the model had a pole through its back and rode round in circles on a carousel.
