I had a reply from the Guardian, which was nice of them.

Thank you for your comment. You are one of the very few people of all the hundreds that have written in, who understand that the premise behind the advert is a comic setup (ie the product turns 'mum' into a professional deli guy). So just to let you know I appreciate reading a comment from someone who understood what the ad was doing!

That's a very nice response. It's rather disturbing to note, though, that 'You are one of the very few people of all the hundreds that have written in, who understand that the premise behind the advert is a comic setup' - uh, hello? Are there really that many stupid people in-Wait. Forget I asked such a dumb question.
Sad, but not a surprise.

And infuriating that it gets banned on 200 complaints but many hundreds of supporting emails don't bring it back. Ho hum - here's hoping!

Henry Brooks Adams said: "There is no such thing as an underestimate of average intelligence."

Sad but true.

That's a great response, but yeah, very depressing that most folks who wrote in just didn't get that it was supposed to be funny. [headdesk]

it's not a democracy at all when a few loudmouth prudes can dictate to everyone else, even about something as silly as a ketchup ad

but this is just a symptom, we all know it goes deeper...and affects all of us in ways we barely understand!

I really can't see how it zoomed over so many peoples' heads.

It didn't zoom over people's heads. There are organized groups of right-wing extremists who barrage any TV or radio station that makes gay-friendly statements--it's entirely possible that the 200-odd comments were generated by a dozen 'purity warriors' with multiple e-mail addresses. That's how these chowderheads got evolution banned from textbooks in Texas and other 'red'neck states. That's why the rest of us have to waste our time writing in to demonstrate that a balance actually exists.

Which reminds me, there's a poll at

http://60minutes.yahoo.com/segment/185/don39t_ask_don39t_tell

about gays in the military.

Erastes, where exactly did you send that comment?

No-one seemed to question why a RdNiro lookalive was living with the man!

Or why he was wearing a deli uniform in "his" kitchen. [eyeroll] You really have to wonder about some people. All right, a lot of people.

I sent one to Heinz and one directly to the guardian page as linked at the bottom of the article.

That's weird, my kids are taught evolution--and we live in Texas. :/

I think that was Kansas with the publicity over banning the teaching of evolution, wasn't it? But, yeah, Texas is just as bad and in some ways worse.
I'm surprised the Heinz thing hasn't attracted more media.

Maybe enough parents got fed up -- this was about 20 years ago, during the Reagan administration, I think.

Totally off-topic for this post, but I went to the Rijksmuseum today and saw the Night Watch. So worth it - it was amazing to see in person. There's so much you miss in reproductions (brushwork, thickness of paint, lighting, etc.) Thanks for the suggestion!

I KNEW THAT!!!

I was on a board recently that had people screaming about it being a gay lifestyle one.

I posted the comment "Um, I thought the mustard turned Mum into the delii guy," and everyone made mock.

That's more than I've got from Heinz yet!

What a lovely response. I've had a couple of replies from journalists when I've commented/emailed them; it's really nice to know that they care enough about the issues to reply sometimes.
