Frost Fair is at 35K and I'm done, baby! *slam dunks*
I put Gideon through HELL, I tell you, HELL! bwahahahahaha!!!!
Drawback to living in the country - FLIES!!!! I'm being driving insane at the moment. I've got a swat, a flykiller pen (which complete crap as I paint surfaces with it which the flies then land on and laugh at me) I have a hanging fly killing unit thingy, not an electric one and they just seem to like that and I'm going MAD!
Next year I'm going to invest in some fly screen material and plaster it over all the windows. You guys with screen windows and doors don't know how lucky you are.

Date: 2008-08-14 08:41 pm (UTC)Also, have you ever tried the bowl of sugar water approach to flies? The bastards drown themselves before becoming more of a nuisance.

Date: 2008-08-14 10:44 pm (UTC)I live in the country, too. Last night a mosquito-looking thing the size of my freakin' thumb was squatting smugly on my wall. I was assured by a neighbor these do not bite, which is the only reason there's no For Sale sign out front today. Good luck with the flies. Arrogant pests. Julia Linnea's suggestion about the sugar water is a good one. Make it a nice, deep bowl!

Date: 2008-08-14 10:59 pm (UTC)Yes, I love the silence... the bugs. Not so much, specially when spiders land your face in the middle of the night!

Date: 2008-08-14 11:15 pm (UTC)A silver lining, bug-wise is that in August, just at sundown, we get swooping swarms of dragonflies. They're stunning. And I didn't mind the night the fireflies made camp in the shower. But yeah, the spiders and flies and mossies and earwigs, I could live happily without.

Date: 2008-08-14 11:47 pm (UTC)...yeah, we're kinda glad the flies mostly keep out. Our screens haven't done the job in years, especially not since Bodie tore a hole in the sunroom door.
(And, yeah, he is named for the guy from The Professionals.)

Date: 2008-08-15 12:56 am (UTC)Ugh, flies! Fortunately we don't live near any livestock, just a pineapple plantation, so we don't get a lot of flies. Mosquitoes though? By the millions! Don't know which is worse, actually.

Date: 2008-08-15 02:02 am (UTC)Can you just get some screen fabric from a DIY place, run a bead of caulk around the window openings, and stick the screening to the caulk? (We've got screens, but the previous owner didn't keep 'em up, so we have small visitors. Good exercise for the cats. Can you get hold of lavender or pennyroyal oil, or citronella candles?

Date: 2008-08-15 08:20 am (UTC)I'm definitely going to investigate some temporary screens next year, that's for sure, perhaps ones that hang from the lintel with a weight as the cats do love to loll out of the window.

Date: 2008-08-18 03:29 pm (UTC)Flies. Ick. We have some big-ass spiders in our house, so we have very few flies. As long as the spidrens keep well away from me that's okay.
