I've been keelhauled mateys! Me and my cabin-boy
canarieschick sat down to watch Tropic Thunder - some Shipping Forecast about the Tropic of Capricorn I thought - to find it was some war film! I shot the usher in the aisles, overturned the popped corne stand and plundered the grog bar in disgust.
However it was bloody funny and I loved it.For a cinema-aholic like me I found this absolutely brilliant, so so so many digs at Hollywood, and a billion and one homage shots to other Vietnam war films like Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, Apocalypse Now and probably more I missed. This is the second Stiller directed film that I've seen and I'll say something for him, he makes better films starring himself than other directors do.
From the first minute you know you are in for it because the actors - as their characters each have a trailer for their newest film. Tugg Speedman is bringing out "Scorcher VI", Jeff Portnoy is doing a "Klumps" rip-off "The Fatties" - and Kirk Lazarus is bringing out "Satan's Alley" about gay monks, which I personally would pay good money to see. Please click on the links. They've REALLY gone to town with these sites.
Do you think anyone would mind if I stole the plot of Satan's Alley?
yes - that's Tobey McGuire... *dies laughing * wouldn't YOU go and see that????
Add in brilliant performances by Nick Nolte, Matthew McConaughay - and a Steve Coogan performance I didn't hate! The best performance though is one that made my jaw drop to the FLOOR when it came up on the credits. You'll not spot him, you'll never guess and if you get surprised by it, don't let the cat out of the bag because it's bloody brilliant.
If you like war films, you'll spot the references, if you like Hollywood satire (they are harsh - but I think they could have been harsher!), if you like to laugh at "luvvies" - all good reasons to go and see this. I think it's one of the best films this year to be honest, and I wonder if the satire will go over people's heads. They might see it like a watered down "superhero movie" or something - which in a way - it is- but it's far far FAR cleverer than that.
Hamlet in Facebook stylee - hilarious.
ETA: I've just noticed that you can change Googles language to "Pirate" - BRILLIANT!

Date: 2008-09-19 10:14 pm (UTC)Incidentally, Satan's Alley (http://www.satansalley.com/) and Kirk Lazarus (http://www.kirklazarus.com/) BOTH have their own websites hehehe. Check out the wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tropic_thunder) for more links. And oh, please, please, please flesh out Satan's Alley. You'll be able to do justice to the UST and sly humour. PLEASE PLEASE PRETTY PLEASE?
