Good luck to everyone who's taking off with NANO today! You are all mad, but I hope you make it. I look forward to reading your progress.

OK - how funny is this? I'm pretty sure that my ex-boss, who I've mentioned a few times, was trolling the Speak Its Name chat last night. *incredulous blinking* The email address she used was her initials which I should have spotted when she applied, but didn't - and when I approved her I just approved everyone in one lump (bad moderating...). I didn't even notice until that email unsubscribed this morning. Her application said "The prospect of participating promises to be stimulating" which again, might have rung alarm bells (In conjunction with the email address) if I hadn't been hopped up on cake because everyone one else mentioned the historical fiction or where they'd learned of the group. God knows what she expected to find.

How very sad. And incredibly funny. You'd think that someone in her position would have better things to do than pathetically spying on a group of readers and writers having a fun chat. So if it was you? Imagine me laughing my arse off at you right now. I hope I'm wrong, though, because... creepy!

I had a great birthday, thanks mostly, to all of you. Thank you ALL. I still haven't managed to thank everyone for all the good wishes, virtual gifts, cards etc - or to read through all the posts on the Chat yet - had 500 emails in 10 hours.... The Speak Its Name chat was hugely successful and I think everyone enjoyed themselves. We had hundreds of posts, some great giveaways, and about 100 members by the end of the night. I think it will be a good group to help promote the genre of gay historical fiction.

I went out for dinner with Kerry and went to watch the James Bond film.We were supposed to eat at Pizza Hut but as usual when we went in, we were ignored, then we got a rushed waitress who looked at us when we said "table for two please" as if we'd ordered an astronaut on toast. She disappeared off, not saying whether we should follow or stay put and never returned. We saw her dashing hither and yon but she didn't come back. Instead we got 2nd waitress -this one with a snotty expression who said. "We don't have any tables for two" (next time I'll say table for four and say they have stood us up)

I said - "That's ok - we'll wait."

Snotty waitress: "It'll be at least 20-25 minutes."

Me: "That's ok. we'll sit in the bar and have a drink."

SW: "You can't have a drink unless you are at a table."

I don't know how I managed to stay calm, even at this point, but I said. "Oh - I don't think we'll bother then" and swept out.

We went to the Mexican place next door where:

- The staff immediately took charge of us with smiles.
- Found us a table
- made us feel welcome

Guess which restaurant we'll be going to again, and which one we'll NEVER go to again?

As for the film, it was very good - but I didn't enjoy it as much as I wanted to. The dialogue was difficult to follow at times as they employed all the "trendy" camera effects - shaking etc - the plot was incomprehensible - you need to have watched the last film pretty recently to remember what had happened because the plot all hinged on what had happened in that - so be warned - and the action scenes were all cut to ribbons and jolted about so much it lost nearly all of the WOW factor. I never really felt that Bond was in danger. Craig is still brilliant in the role, as is Dench - in fact all of the performances were excellent, but I missed Q, I missed the gadgets, I missed Moneypenny - hell. I miss the FRANCHISE. I don't want Bond to become another Bourne. I want one-liners and exploding space stations and trick cars with oil slicks and impossible weapons and a baddie I'm really frightened of - and this film didn't go there and disappointed me.

Well, better get some lunch! And Tadzio had better wipe the blood from his mouth and stop being evil.

Alas, I completely forgot about the chat! But it was so cold here that I stayed in the living room (where it's warmer) mostly, watching TV and knitting. I ended up having to put the heating on for a bit to get into the bedroom so I could make the PC do its virus scan and stuff. Sounds like you had a good time anyway, despite the possible ex-boss-troll!

It was fun - not productive really, but good to meet the readers. We'll be doing more meaty stuff in time.

I'm worried about the birdies - my bird table is groaning with food and all I've seen for three days is my pair of collared doves and one coal tit.

Oh, I've still got the Sparrowing Hordes. Not as many goldfinches, but I don't know if they migrate or what. And I've not seen the robin for a bit, but I think he's still around. Still got the tits, too.

The ex boss...daft bat, haha! I missed the chat too *sob* Then again, I doubt whether my stupid puter would have let me register!

*flings sombrero in the air* At least you had a lovely meal somewhere!

Well I hope you try and register - we have a lot of great authors and some really enthusiastic readers and historians. We've already discovered two more writers of the genre, and hope to find more - and to encourage more to try it.

Stupid really - to encourage competition, but the genre needs encouraging.

I've only ever written 'present time'. Grizedale Reunion is the first thing I've written with a 'thirty year gap' evident...so not that historical, lol.

The historical genre does fascinate me, however. I will take the plunge and try to register tho :)

Re Daniel Craig - heard him on the BBC last week (god the man is gorgeous) and he said he does not want to do the typical BOnd one liners until he feels he's earned them. It was actually rather sweet. He said they tried the typical "Bond.. James Bond" line in the film and it completely stuck out. Just FYI.

Also - am loving speak its name. You guys are so inspriational!!! I got excited enough to convert the second bedroom into a writing room (i.e. invest in whiteboards as I am seriously visual learner) and begin. Which means ripping things out of books and sticking them on boards but hey - will lead to coherency! Logic! Thought!

What a great way or working! I am gradually sticking stuff on my walls too - hell, its only me here so who's to care - so I may do the same!

i'm sticking the whiteboards on the bed - that way I can hide them if my extremely catholic relatives visit - poor things, I'm already shacking up with a man, I don't know how stressed they would get if they knew I was writing gay historical novels. Mother would be fine, but poor father - he'd be torn between trying to read it because it is his precious daughter and freaking out. Better not to scare them too much then!

Re teh restaurant - we had *exactly* the same thing happen to us last night in Solihull! Walked in to TGI Fridays, got ignored for 5 minutes, then a harassed-looking waiter rushed over and the first thing he said was 'there's a ten minute wait for tables'. I looked round the almost-empty restaurant and said 'huh?' and he made some excuse about having to cover the whole place on his own - on a Friday night, on Halloween, on the last day of half term. O.o Either he really was on his own and the management want walloping, or he was lying. Either way, we said 'um, no, maybe not', wandered off and had a meal at a posh burger place instead.

How weird that we both had the same thing on the same night!

I could have understood it if it had been at 7 or something - but this was at 530!!

This is the fourth time we've had this kind of attitude at this particular Pizza Hut, although we did get a table the other times. Glad you got a decent meal too!
