Found a short story competition I got all fired up about yesterday - you had to be inspired by Jane Austen and the head of the judging panel was Sarah Waters, so I thought it be worth submitting a gay regency, but I read the rules today and found that I'm not eligible as I've had a full length book published. I hope that someone else I know has a go--the link is over at Speak Its Name and good luck!

I'm more than half way through Liriel by Garth Nix and although I'll probably finish the series, just because I'm a finisher, I'm really not into it.

In Lirael We have ANOTHER Sue character who can do everything. Far more than loads of other people in the same place, work all sorts of magics, creating a dog-friend-sending (which shouldn't be able to speak but AMAZINGLY it does) and LO! she turns out to be someone with a Destiny. I'm a little bored with people with Destinies. I'd like a book where someone was supposed to be the chosen one and wasn't. This is tempered by Sameth who is in De Nile about having to be the next Abhorsen because he's a big fat chicken (which is a better idea than Sue-dom) however he goes into Death without any training and gets out alive--and I will bet my baked potatoes that he's going to do Something Amazing by the end of it all. He wins points from me by being obviously gay, making friends with a male guard, eschewing all attempts to get him off with female worthies and rushing off into the wilds to save his male friend. However - I'm quite sure that he'll be meeting up with SUE pretty soon and all gayness will disappear.

What was Sabriel thinking leaving him to teach himself anyway?

And PLEASE. If I see one more description of glowy charter marks I will run mad!

hee.

I have a book in my head (not M/M) about a man who accidentally finds that he is the most powerful man in the UK because he is the government functionary in charge of ID cards. It kind of goes on from there. And it even has a title!
