Gmail chat is so useful. Also G-Talk. When my computer last had a conniption fit G-talk was the only programme that worked on it. The simple but robust little thing chugged along even when I couldn't get online - I suspect it uses smoke signals or very fast pigeons.
I just posted about setting up an IMAP connection on Thunderbird to check your email so you don't need to worry about the web interface going down. It's past the point of being needed but it may be useful if there is a next time.
Aargh. It was awful. All my 'grown up' governor training stuff was on there and guess who needed to access it for an hour and when the hour was? Got it done in the end but...
