Am watching the BBC version of BYRON and so far, he’s neither mad, bad or dangerous to know. He’s frankly repressed and most disappointing. Hopefully he will start ravaging young men at some point although I sincerely doubt  it.

The scriptwriter needs a smack imho, too.

Sadly, it doesn't - the only signs of gayness are at the very beginning when he cuddles up with a young man in Greece. There's a school of thought that claims he only had homosexual relations outside England.

He gets madder and badder when he gets married, but not really in a good way. I am sorry to say George is not a terribly exciting reprobate.

just finished it, hugely disappointing. The most shocking thing he did was sodomise his wife. They missed out the five days of Phantasmagoria entirely!

Well, that's a lot more relevant to the Shelleys than it is to Byron - he didn't produce anything of note. I have to say, I actually like this version. It could have been a lot worse, and I liked Jonny Lee Miller in it.

Sodomy was more shocking than incest? How are we ruined by HP fandom.

The thing is, his life wasn't actually that exciting. There is a lot of depression and drinking and dieting and self-loathing, but not that much stuff that would translate well to drama. This version is pretty accurate in terms of both events and character.

From what I've read of Byron, he was mostly a legend in his own mind.

Of course, it was easier to be shocking in those days.

Hello E - I've just finished Standish and wanted to say how fantastic it is - don't know if Chris mentioned to you but I really believe as some point in the future it would be fab to get it onto TV - I confess I don't know how you would do this however, I just wanted to pass on the thought of a mini-serious to you - something to think about. I can hear the sounds of the horses and carriage as I think about it even some of the background music surrounding some of the characters....

It was a really a brilliant read - I love the characters and was really surprised by Flurey. As I mentioned to Chris I reluctantly put down The Master and Margarita - Bulgakov to read yours and I believe it was a good decision.

Will definately recommend to my friends - some will probably faint but it makes for conversation which is all the more publicity ?

Thank you very much, WL - I totally agree!! I'd love Channel Four to make it - I suppose I should be brave and just send it to them. perhaps if I get an agent at some point that's something they could do - I would be gutted if, due to my faffing about - they chose someone else's book to be the first gay historical on the TV. Gotta happen eventually! I mean, they could easily fade out for the sex scenes.
