Can I just welcome all the new watcher, friends and commenters?  When I had the old blog as underlucius I used to have a regular friending party, and that’s not a tradition that I’ve kept up here, to my regret.

I only have one rule – polite discussion.

Disagree with me, and each other – all you like – but stay polite.  If you don’t know the difference between debate and wank then you aren’t welcome here.

And before you do pile in with your dissent, remember that everyone is entitled to their opinion—no matter how much you might disagree with it.  I live in a country where I can say what I like—literally.  Criticising the government, the royal family – anything.  I can stand in Speakers Corner and rally my minions.  I don’t – I’m far too lazy.  Come the day when I do take over the world, I’ll be one of those World Dominatrices who lie on silken cushions with a slave boy or two on a leash while my troops do the hard work. And yes, I will have read the Evil Overlord’s list. Carefully.

So, I’m entitled to my opinion, you are entitled to yours.  I am not going to bother to troll over to your LJ attempting to change your mind about anything, so it’s not worth working too hard to change mine.  Not that I have much of one left, mind you.

No doubt. Occasionally I'll see an LJ comment (and I've seen a lot of them in this whole Lambda debate) that I really want to respond to, then I take a deep breath, realize that the commenter and I are just so far apart in world view that there's no way we're even talking the same language and move on. Life is too short to tilt at every online windmill that comes down the pike.

Completely - in the last few weeks I've lost that desperate urge to tilt, as it were, just want to say my piece and get on with the stuff i have to get on with.

I noticed that you had been linked at [livejournal.com profile] metafandom, which is always a bit of a mixed blessing, particularly if you don't have a week or so spare to answer comments. It's cool that the m/m community is becoming that much more visible to slash fandom now.

I'm still waiting to hear what RP decide on False Colors before I make a post about the awards. May as well get all the info on that side first, so I can cover it all at once.

It would have been polite if people had said where they were coming from. I always do if I barge into someone's LJ that I've not commented in before, but I shouldn't expect the same level of politeness as I generate myself.

You think a community called fandom would concentrate on fandom though.

I guess I am one of those new(er) friends/commenters. You generally have something interesting to say and, so far, agree with my point of view, er, yeah.

I usually try to see both sides of a situation or opinion, but sometimes this cannot be done, as the other side's opinion is not based on logic, but pure emotion, therefore, debate is useless. On the other hand, an opinion may come from lack of all the facts, or merely coming at the problem from only one angle. The trick is to attempt to see the thing from the other's point of view, as well as one's own. If a person can present all the facts and/or the other angles without attacking with their own emotions, one may gain a convert . . . or even a friend.

This does not always make for exciting, controversial blogs, but what the hell.

Thank you - and hello.

I closed the Lambda thread because I had no idea who all those strangers are - and if I barge into someone's thread I at least introdcue myself or say where I cam from. Some people have no idea of netiquette.

I have no interest in making a name for myself by being contraverial or wanky or bitchy. There are a few sad gits who get their jollies by doing that, and I feel sorry for them. I state my view - and allow other people to state theirs. If I don't agree, and the discussion is going nowhere then I'll fall silent - I'm not the kind of person who wants the last word - god knows there are enough of those!

Anyway - glad to have you onboard.

There are threads I've run across from that crosspost that I wasn't even going to waste time with. I suppose one could counter 'heteronormative privilege' with 'white male privilege' because honey, when you observe the little group of gay guys who think they define 'literature,' it looks awfully like a blanc-mange, but -- that way lies endless wank, and gender-studies jargon gives me the pip. I'm a human being writing human beings, and anything beyond that... sorry, I'm trying to get a book finished here.

"Am not!"
