Little Aslan had to be put to sleep today, and I'm in bits.  Dad's taken it pretty well, thank god, although I am worried that he'll forget about it on a regular basis and that I'm in for days of urgent phone calls as he forgets and can't find Aslan around the house. We ummed and ahhed about having him brought home and buried in the garden but in this weather - the ground is like iron - we simply couldn't do it, which was upsetting enough.

Basically his kidneys failed, brought on by bad teeth. I told the vet I wished that they'd taken all of his teeth out last time but he said he didn't like to do that, as their jaws are so delicate and they don't take out more than they have to.  But I still wish they had, and maybe he'd still be alive now.

Dad's saying now that he doesn't want another dog, although he changes his mind when I tell him it's a bad idea to be sitting alone day after day. He's 81, but very active and fit - has no health problems, and has never had any all of his life other than a hernia.  No arthritis, no rheumatism, no heart problems - in fact he's a lot healthier than me - and he could easily live another 20 years.  even if he lives another five years - I told him - he doesn't want to be sitting alone all day every day with no furry face and another warm body in the house to talk to, and a reason to go for a walk twice a day.

I've got the addresses of several rehoming centres (surprisingly few in this area!) and I'll kidnap him over the weekend and go and have a look at what they've got. A small dog like a Westie or a small Bitzer would be ideal, he doesn't want anything bigger. Something that will be grateful for a good home.  Hope we can find something. Poor little chap, I'm going to miss him so much.
