oh dear. It’s almost not funny.
Mar. 5th, 2010 09:26 pmBut then it is. Hugely. I know this will resonate – for good reasons and bad, with many of my writerly friends.
And is there anything you can do when someone KEEPS inviting you to be a FAN of his on facebook and you really really don’t? Other than being horribly rude?
I still need Swedish help…Seems like no-one speaks Swedish. I am not going to learn Swedish for one word. I shall get it wrong and risk ridicule and then it won’t be the best book ever. :)

Re: translating English to Swedish
Date: 2010-03-05 09:47 pm (UTC)It says "dricka"
BUT - you see - I don't know whether that's correct. I need to be sure that what they are shouting the ORDER "DRINK!!" rather than just describing liquid that one can put in one's mouth. Granted, it's the same word here, but it might be entirely different in Sweden.
I know - I'M ENTIRELY TOO ANAL!!!!! but readers take pleasure in pointing out one's errors like this.
But until I have any other proof to the contrary, I shall use dricka.
Thanks again!

Date: 2010-03-06 01:25 pm (UTC)Sadly, though, it reminds me of a woman with whom I work who self-pubbed a book and sports it around like it's "the best book ever." My heart breaks for her. She refused to have it edited (because it's the best book ever) Standing at 650 pages, it contains duplicate paragraphs, type-o's, sequence of events mixed up and the list goes on. Her "publisher" required her to buy I think 1,000 copies up front.
Regarding translations, I use http://www.freetranslation.com when I need something small translated (the bane of my existence is French--why, oh why did I choose to place my characters in France). But when I need something serious translated, I nag a colleague of mine who is French. I keep promising him that one day I will stop bastardizing his beautiful language and learn to actually speak it. He chuckles at me, but appreciates I've learned a few phrases.
