A while back – probably a couple of years, I think – I realised that eating pure hard cheese was Not Good For Me, as I had a bout of food induced arthritis, although I didn’t recognise it for that, after eating a huge chunk of cheddar. Then a few months later I did it again and it happened again and finally thicko put two and two together.  So you’d think I’d have learned, wouldn’t you?  No. I chomped on some cheese last night about 100grammes… and woke in the night to such painful feet and ankles joints that I couldn’t sleep. It’s bloody weird. Processed cheese – no probs. Soft cheese. No probs. COOKED cheese – no problems. There’s obviously something in hard cheese that is the problem that is broken down upon heating.  NO MORE CHEESE ON ITS OWN. Do try and remember…

20. What are your favorite character interactions to write?

I think I like it when both characters are attracted and neither of them is capable of doing a darn thing about it. Right now in Muffled Drum, one character has lost two years of his memory—and due to the lack of knowledge about amnesia at the time, his lover has been told not to give him shocks in case it kills him, or jolts more memories away—so the lover can’t say anything—and the amnesiac doesn’t even remember the relationship in any case, he knows he’s homosexual but he thinks he’s got a partner that he in fact doesn’t.  So there’s a lot of UST, a lot of broiling emotions, lots of cross purposes and people getting the wrong end of every stick they are handed.  I don’t like to make life easy for my guys…

Something to do with protein I guess. Chemistry was never my strong point. Heat breaks it down, doesn't it? Then again I would have thought soft and hard cheese would have similar amounts of the stuff.

Really? Food induced arthritis? I did not know that. I will look into it further.
Thanks!

Yes, seems that many foods can trigger it - suppose I'm lucky it's just cheese. WHY DID IT HAVE TO BE CHEESE??? *SHAKES FIST AT GOD*

Food induced arthritis? I didn't know, well, apart from my mother who has it won't eat citrus fruit because that's a trigger; but this means maybe my dodgy hip/shouder/knee could be made worse by something I eat...like lots of cheese. Sigh.

There seems to be a huge list of triggers - hopefully cheese is the only one i have. it's exacerbated by me being so overweight, hopefully if i can get thinner the problem will lessen too. i can see it becoming a real problem otherwise! Try doing without cheese for a while, and see if that makes any difference?

Mum reckons grapefruit (which, alas, she adores) and pork can trigger her arthritis. I've not heard of cheese doing it, though!

after the second bout of it, I did some research, and dairy is pretty much top of the list, it seems. You'd think i would be sensible enough NOT TO TRIGGER A THIRD ONE wouldn't you? *smacks self.*

It probably has something to do with the bacteria or mold that ripened the cheese. You might want to look here to see which cheeses are bacteria or mold ripened and see if you can spot a trend. Try an unripened or cheese with a different method of ripening action and see if they cause you the same grief. If all kinds bother you, it could be the protein bothering you.

Thanks dear - it definitely seems to be hard cheese only - cheddar and cheshire and the like. I love brie and camenbert and it doesn't happen with those, although I'm wary from even over indulging in those now. (which is probably not a bad thing...)
