Why is it that people with many dogs aren’t “the mad dog lady”?

I also saw a man with two bassets. I had to restrain myself from leaping out of the car and dognapping them.

I feel that way when I see the man in my neighbourhood with his two samoyeds. He looks like a man walking a couple of small polar bears. I wants them (well, till my hoover exploded from the fur they'd shed.)

They were really nice Bassets too, longer legs, fit and easy moving - I like the way the breed is changing for the better.

I love Samoyed's too. But I'd need to live in Greenland or something.

Yes, they do look like they should be pulling a sled or something.

There's a nice basset hound around my way, definitely tall with long legs rather than the low slung Fred Basset look.

Fred Basset... bloody hell, that's a blast from the past.

Two bassets!! Blessings abounding indeed. When I worked at London Uni, one of our professors used to bring in his basset hound to work to stop it howling in loneliness to the neighbours at home. We were all in love with it. And him. He was about 180 years old but a total gent. Occasionally he used to waltz with his wife (one of our secretaries and about 140 years old) in the corridors. I mean really waltz. While watched by the basset. Ah those were the days ...

That's a good question. Maybe dogs themselves are not seen as being the deviants that cats are. Hence, dogs don't make people crazy just because you have a bunch. I have a client with four dogs and another with six dogs. These are "normal" people living in normal houses.

Hee! I don't know what we'd do with two bassets. Considering the one we have is the laziest dog on this planet. ;)

That is a darn good question. Surely owning cats is far saner than keeping dogs? Cats don't require you to take them out for walkies in all weathers, and most of them scoop their own poop.

I suspect the answer lies in the common complaint that low-grade, insecure men have: "They don't do what you tell them to." Often said of both cats.. and women. Women with cats are doubly peculiar.

Or it could be that the sort of folks who call people 'crazy' for loving animals don't have balls enough to snark at someone who's in control of five dogs...

We've got one dog to four cats--only crazy part-time.

Which is odd, really, because every dog we've had was totally pwned by the cats. Our big ol' Maine Coon used to leap out and ambush the Retriever by grappling him around the ruff as if he was steer-wrestling (which sometimes wrked, too.) Usually it ended with making the Retriever back up a good two yards to get free. I'm not sure how the cat did that, with both paws in the ruff, since he wasn't raking the dog's nose, but back up he did. A lifted paw had a similar effect. Of course, the cat weight 35 pounds at that point, so not a small object to come darting at you with fun in mind. (The cat seemed to find it amusing.)

Yeah, but when you're walking five dogs, you'd better be leading the pack or you're going to wind up with leashes wrapped round your legs and probably at least one unhappy shoulder socket. That level of leadership is pretty powerful.

It could also be that a person might assume a woman with 5 dogs is a professional pet-sitter. It's a line of work I think about sometimes, when the internet wank gets intense. Compared to people, dogs are eminently rational.
