What is it with Clove Cigarettes?

I've read a ton of fanfics with them in, and before fanfiction I'd never heard of them. Are they supposed to be cool, or what? You can't (as far as I'm aware) get them over here.

Do people smoke them to make their breath sweeter or what?

I just don't get it. Make your protag smoke Camel. That's a HARD ciggie. Or Gitanes. Cloves just SOUND girlie.

I'm reading an original fic now and here there are again! gah!!!

When I was in high school people I knew smoked them. They were 'cool'. But when I read about them in comics and stories it tends to be a bit mocking, like those who WANT to be cool smoke them but really, the cool is rather juvenile.

Besides, all the really cool kids smoked pot or did acid anyways. =p

they irritate me, it's like the pretentious cigarrette.

and *giggles* yes. pot is much better than silly cloves!

The REALLY pretentious girls I knew, the ones that REALLY wanted to be 'different' and 'cool' (bearing in mind I went to a performing arts high school where you really had to work to stand out) smoked cigars or cigarillos. And one fellow I dated smoked a pipe. (But I got to pick the pipe tobacco so I'd pick nice smelling blends like Catalina which has a mellow vanilla vibe to it.)

I really like the taste of them. Of course, being a non-smoker (or, rather, a non-tobacco smoker), I never know where to get them unless [livejournal.com profile] themostepotente is around to steal from.

er - according to the research I've done, it says they have 60-70 percent tobacco in them!

Well, by non-tobacco smoker I mean I smoke a hell of a lot more pot than I do cigarettes of any kind. I'm not particularly concerned about the tobacco content, since I smoke maybe a couple cloves in a year and that's on the heavy end.

Tried one. Much nicer than tobacco IMO.

I have very few muses that smoke. The one who does consistantly is a chain smoker and prefers Salems.

But they are at least 60 percent tobacco.

Don't know Salems, but they sound better than Cloves

They're a filter tip menthol.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salem_(cigarette)

Menthols are usually smoked by African-Americans. And filters are sissy.

And he's a blond, back-bay Bostonian, but he is a big sissy.

What startled ME was realizing that Corwin of bloody AMBER smoked menthols. Yes, Salems. I would NEVER have figured him for a menthol smoker -- Camels or Lucky Strikes, because he's so very noir.

But it's in there.

Clove cigarettes are the official cigarette of Angsty Goths everywhere. Are you sure you can't get them? Djarums, from India - I'd think they'd be EASIER in England, if anything.

They smell nice when burning (unlike Gitanes, which smell like burning cow patties), and, best of all, they leave a sweet, faintly sticky residue of clove oil on your lips.Your breath is still tobacco-y as well as clove-y, but the sweet sticky residue is oh so very nice to kiss.

I haven't had any in a year. I have been seriously considering making homemade lip gloss and flavoring it with clove oil, because that's what I miss most.

I used to smoke clove cigs for the taste; I didn't inhale them deeply because they did terrible things to my throat. Of course, I smoked them for their taste in my post-Goth phase; they are, for angsty American theatre/art/writing majors everywhere, the "hey-I'm-cool" prop of choice. ;)

Most people who put cloves in fic smoke them themselves; they're the only thing I smoke, and I don't smoke them often (2-3 times a year). I think they're not thinking about the fact that people who smoke cloves usually aren't really smokers!

The first time I came across it I thought "Wait... they're smoking clovers?"

And then decided to let it lie. I haven't come across t all that often though. Like two or three times or somthing

Personally, I like Cloves. My brand of choice is Djarum Black (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Djarum#Black). I rather like the cinnamon and clove taste to it, and the way it smells. Or, I ssmoke Dunhill Superior Mild (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dunhill_%28cigarette%29).

Granted, I haven't seen them in fic or even original fic, so I have no idea how they are used, but for me personally, those are the ones I like. I also usually don't do cloves very often, although for the last few weeks it seems I'm smoking more of them than anything else.

It's also sorta a Goth thing. None of the Smokers I know will go to a club without them... although, you're just hanging out then they probably have Marborls in thier pockets cause they're cheaper. Cloves are a nicer flavor. Me, when I smoked, was Camel unfiltered. If you're going to kill yourself with cancer sticks, might as well go whole hog.

To be very honest I never got them either. I've smelled them before and walked the other way..now a cigar..some of those are numy. Cloves do sound girlie.

Um, I don't smoke them anymore, but the sweet something or others? I forget.. I just like the smell, really..yeah.

I've never heard of them over here, either. But erm... to me they sound kind of disgusting. :/ But I used to smoke regular tobacco, so anything that's not Golden Virginia sounds kind of disgusting to me. :) :)

Also, hi! Long time. I hope you're doing well. :)

I've been smoking Djarums on and off since I was thirteen. Blacks are anything but pussy. I've smoked the gamut from Marlboro reds to Galoises and Gitanes.

It's what I personally prefer.

I think I offered to mail you some before.

Ok I admit, I did start smoking cloves back in my goth phase. It is the norm here in the states that goth bars=clove cigarettes. I however, started smoking regular cigarettes at age 13 (I am 38 now) and I only smoked cloves at the club. A few years ago I met a friend and she smoked cloves. I had forgotten how pleasant they smelled and tasted. I bummed one and soon began to smoke them regularly.
I got picked on at work and in public for the incenseish smell and I actually felt as if my lungs were bleeding after smoking them every day for 3-4 years. I recently switched back to regular marlboro cigs and my cough is not half as bad as when on cloves.

I do have to disagree that they are "girlie" though. I think they are more goth boy cute to be exact. It is very sensuus to see a pretty little goth boy taking a drag of a clove then leaning over to kiss his hot boyfriend....lol

I do not think they do much for the breath actually but they do have a distinct taste of sweetness.

I also have to differ on your comment about people smoking them to be cool. I believe that the real reason they even became a goth staple is that a lot of the bands that came to the states from other countries brought them and the fad caught on over here. Once you could not find cloves here and then all of a sudden they were in every smoke shop.

I'd never heard of cloves until I came on LJ, but I have seen them a lot.

Mmmmm Camel. They were the smoke of choice when I was a student, except then we all switched to Golden Virginia roll ups because it was cheap (not because we thought we looked cool, honest).

The hardest fag I've ever smoked was a Park Drive. Some sixty year old hardened smoker gave me one when I ran out and it nearly ripped my lungs out. It was great. God I miss smoking.

I miss it too. I was a marlboro girl, soft packs when I could get them, which wasn't often.
