(written during the day, at Dad's)

or at least so far, back to faffing around. Hope you all had a good Christmas (and please imply your holiday of choice, I can't be arsed to pander to the insensitively challenged. If you wished me a happy Hanukkah, I wouldn't take it amiss, I'd simply take it in the spirit it was offered.) I am hugely tired, and may go to bed when I get in.

However, today - I must get on with the edits for Muffled Drum which are due on 6th January (before if possible) – there's not a huge amount to do at this stage, but as I'm re-inserting the piece I took out, I need to make sure the edges join up, and they don't, not completely.

MEME!!!! Share your Christmas Cracker jokes:

1. Where do snowmen go to dance?

a Snowball!

2. What do you give a sick pig?

OINKMENT!

Come on, share share share, while you can still remember them. I could do with the groans.

I loved loved loved the Christmas Doctor Who, which was just amazing—even though time travel gives me a headache, because I'm all "yes but if you killed your grandfather you wouldn't be around to kill him" – not that there was any killing of grandfathers, but there were paradoxes that didn't—for this bear of little brain—make sense. But who cares, Matt was brilliant,(he's becoming my number two favourite doctor)(Patrick Troughton is number one) there was little of annoying Pond, lovely music, great comedy moments, snow, steampunk, FEESH!, hot guys in Victorian clothes and a gorgeous Peter Pan moment, which made me tear up. (bonus points if you spotted it too) What's not to love?!

The new Upstairs Downstairs was only marred by the brilliance of Downton Abbey – but I think there's room for both – and I hugely enjoyed the way that it wasn't a re-making, but a continuation of the same story of the house, with lovely teary (again, me – blame surplus of me alone at home drinking copious amount of gin) moments which reminded us of Hudson and the others. Great characters and I look forward to seeing what happens to them. If I had one quibble it was the fact that the Keeley Hawes character (and sheesh, do we not have HAVE any other actresses??) and her sister were "old money" ("which means there was none" as the sister said) and yet she had to be constantly reminded how to speak and behave in polite society. This would have been ingrained into her from birth for goodness sake, you only have to read the Mitford books to see that. Even the chauffeur had to tell her there were rules, which I found baffling. I'm hoping the chauffeur is gay, of course, but I can't have everything…

There was one nice thing happened at Christmas. We pulled the last two of the crackers that Mum had bought for Christmas 4 years ago and there were little presents inside – we had had no idea, but I should have realised, it was something she often did, bought something tiny and pushed them into the cracker. Dad had a pair of silver cufflinks and I had a pair of silver earrings. We both cried like babies.

oo!! A Jackdaw!  I've never seen a jackdaw in the garden before! Shows you just how hungry the birds are, all there is is bread. Even the seagulls are trying to land. with all the dull birds we have, I feel like James Stewart in Mr Hobbs Takes a Vacation. "Just another barn swallow…"

See^? Faffing.

Bunny farts.

The story about your mother is beyond touching, honey. How incredibly lovely. *heavy, smiling sigh*

Yes! I knew there was something niggling me about those two characters. It's something I need to bear in mind too. Kate, Edward (and even Brigit to a lesser extent) know the Rules, even if they choose to ignore some of them either through necessity or a conscious rebellion. Speaking of the Mitfords, there was a lovely write-up in Mum's WI magazine about a small group of women taking tea with Debo. She has chickens! And she is completely happy as long as she's still healthy enough to carry their buckets of feed up to them every day!

it was lovely - and as I say just about the only good spot in the day.

I have mobs of greedy gutses here every day - can't keep up with them!

It's lovely to think that somewhere, there's a Mitford girl still in the world, feeding chickens! :D

It's beautiful, and I hope she is as good now as she was some twenty-ish years ago at materialising-and-looming just when you would be least expecting to encounter her.
