I must start READING again. It worries me—I'm the sort of person who used to read a book a day, but now money is an issue, it's been a vice i can no longer indulge in. I must start going to the library again—although they have few of the books I need for reviewing.

My e-reader is dead. I knew it was a mistake to get one, as electronics and me are a disaster made in hell—it turns on, but the touch screen is no longer working. I shall try and send it back. I am furious at myself for wasting all that money on one. I knew I shouldn't have.

The whole exclusive platform thing with videogames really irritates me. I do understand that one or other console might like exclusivity for a much-hyped game, but these contracts shouldn't be forever, they should only be for six months or a year perhaps at most and then let everyone else have it! I will NOT WILL NOT ever be buying an Xbox (well, perhaps five years in the future, when I can get one for £20) just to play games that I can't get on the PC or PS3. Right now I'd LOVE to play the Fable games but I can't – I can play Fable I but II is only on Xbox. Although they say that Fable 3 may come out on the PC in 2011…but no official announcement yet.

oh and this is why I want to play Fable 3.

But bloody hell I don't want to play it on the PC!  i hate all the buttons you have remember – I like a controller!

And I've just discovered Alan Wake (which no one bought, it seems) also only available on the Xbox.

And while I'm at it, I'm fed up with Jimmy Wales begging for money on Wikipedia. And Lambda Literary too.

Buggeration re the e-reader and platform games. And wikipedia. And generally non-erastestastic life.

Oh no! I'm so sorry to hear about the ereader. It must surely still be under warranty, though? You can't have had it that long.

I've been horribly frustrated by school holidays because I find it too hard to write while the house is full of noise, but it's just come to me that I could always take those times as reading opportunities. It does seem that with all this writing and blogging and so on, that time for reading is the first to go.

I agree about Wiki! I've seen it already, it would be cool if it could be turned off or something.

As for reading I recommend Susanna Clarke. It's not gay romance (it's not actually romance at all) but I'm sure you could find some subtext. ;) I'm enjoying it anyway. :)

So sorry to hear about the ereader. The warranty should cover it, shouldn't it?

As for the reading, can your mates send spare copies of their favourite books to you?

i have the same model, it bricks if you look at it funny, it's easily fixed though, as long as you have an sd card i can send you the software and then it's just a matter of booting it up, it works better and suddenly becomes like much harder to brick

fable 3 i played on the xbox and i can't say i was madly in love with it, i much preferred 2, it was in cases rather silly and it had this huge hole to be exploited where you have three days to save the world but those days don;t end until you say so - so you can easily get the money you need if you just poddle about for a while

alan wake is flawed, I played it when it came out, I love the idea, and the story is great, it was delayed forever amen and they spent that time on the story which is a wonderful blend of stephen king and david lynch - however
its never disturbing (see silent hill for instruction manual on that)
and the game play is really repetitive, shine torch on man, shoot, shine torch, shoot, move three paces shine torch, etc

the story ALMOST makes it worth while, but really the game play is that bad
I say sod it and play silent hill 2

I hear you on the e-reader. I had a problem with mine, and they sent me a refurbished replacement, which is actually 85% okay, but still has a few twitches. Which makes me crazy, but I really really really am worried about getting an even worse one if I complain.

Also, she says, tentatively, it is possible that you have the same problem I have with touch screens -- I screw them up and can't get them to work (some electronic THING with my skin -- I also kill watches) -- which would mean you might want to check out the earlier generation of Sony Readers, which did NOT have touchscreens, but actual controls. Mine is the last of those, and I LOVE it. The only problem I have is that it only has three size settings for text, which is frustrating, but not a major deal.

Isn't she the one who wrote Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell?

Yes she is. I'm listening to it on audiobook right now which inspired the suggestion. :)
