Date: 2011-03-07 01:19 pm (UTC)You experienced bad, ill informed teachers who put your work (and you) down and for quite some years you lost your faith in your writing skills (and perhaps even yourself a bit?).
Suddenly I remembered! At the age of 16 (give or take a year)I already was a devoted reader and read Dutch literary writers as well as Nietzsche and Dostojevksi. Curious and testing myself and loving every minute of challenging books.
Then we had to make a book list for our Dutch exam so I handed over a list of Dutch literary writers.
And it was rejected.
My comment that I actually read and enjoyed reading those books were met with cynical laughter. No matter what I said - my teacher was convinced that no 16 years old girl would read, let alone enjoy, those 'heavy' works.
I was forced to make a list of rubbish. Imho.
Part of me lost believe in my intellectual capacities back then. Why bother trying if it was met with disbelief and cynicism? Maybe I was overrating myself?
It made me stop writing as well. Took me also years and years of wasted time before I even dared to start again. Fanfic, like you!
And even to this day I hesitate to try more 'serious' work.
Oh, those teachers...
Teachers.
