I think one of the nicest things you could buy me is a book, a book I haven't read.  There's something wonderful that a friend says "I love this, and I want to share it with you, because you mean a lot to me."

I've been known many many times to give books from my own shelves as presents, because it's intimate and personal.  Probably the recipient thinks "bloody cheapskate"!!!  :)

Anyway, I got a birthday prez this morning from [livejournal.com profile] gehayi which was Legends II and Legends 3, with short stories by Pratchett and Le Guin and GRRM - I'm hoovering them up like a mad thing.  I LOVE NEW BOOKS!

Also, it's a great way to sample the writing of new (to me) writers and will let me know if I want to read more of them.  I'm already in love with Lord John Grey by Diana Galbaldon, I so wanted him to SNOG Stephan in Lord John and the Succubus, the UST was wonderful, all the same.

In writing news, I've had a worrying bunny thats been bashing me on the head for days about writing something about Jean-Baptiste Tavernier and the Hope Diamond...  I wonder if I can make that at ALL slashy?

That reminds me of something the narrator of a book called The Perks of Being A Wallflower says - his girlfriend gives him a book of e.e. cummings poetry that she likes as a gift but he thinks it would have meant more if she gave him her own copy. At the end he gives all of his own copies of his favorite books to the girl he's actually in love with, and it's really sweet. Since I've read that book I feel unthoughtful if I buy a new copy of a book I like to give someone as a gift, but I really do have a big attachment to my own books and can't part with them :)

ext_14568: Lisa just seems like a perfectly nice, educated, middle class woman...who writes homoerotic fanfiction about wizards (Outlander stones)

I LOVE Lord John! I usually follow her progress over at the prodigy boards - she's been working on a few Lord John stories in between writing the next novel in the Outlander series (which is where Lord John is from originally). Must go pick up Legends II now! I didn't realize it had been released. She wrote a novella which may be available over in the UK - Lord John and the Private Matter (which should include the short story that preceded it - The Hellfire Club.)

The Outlander books are REALLY long - she's a very, um, detailed writer, and the first couple were originally marketed as romance, but they took on a life of their own and they're not the least bit 'formulaic', as romance novels tend to be. I don't like the romance genre, but I love these. Lord John is a minor character (a major minor character perhaps), who first appeared in the second book - Dragonfly in Amber - and has since become my favorite character in the series (though I do still love Jamie - the main male lead.)

Yay! Lurker! *clings*

I am quite sure that people think less of me giving them my precious books than I do of giving them, but I don't care. To me, it's like giving a baby away!

I'll certainly get more of hers. I'm not over enthusiastic about the idea of the Outland story, the double marriage idea doesn't interest me, but Black Jack the sadistic bisexual DOES. (hee hee) so I might give them a try.

But I'll certainly dig out more of Lord John, he's just a DARLING. *huggles him*
