Just spent the last hour working surfing and reseraching model railways. O.M.G. there are some major geeks out there.

I don't want Junction X to be The Geek's Gay book (although there are certainly gay men who love model trains, it's far too much of a tiny market for me to aim it at them, sorry, guys) to model trains, just as I didn't want Transgressions to be only of interest to English Civil War buffs. But if I'm going to mention model trains at all (and omg why do i??) then I want to get the details right. [livejournal.com profile] gehayi suggested finding a friendly model train club AND some train spotters (Rail fans I think they call them over the pond) and asking them for help. Damn good idea, say I.

But I really - REALLY - don't want character B to be boringly enthusing over the merits of 0 gauge vs 00 gauge or getting over enthusiatic when The Mallard comes to town, when really, all character A wants to do to character B is stick his hand down his jeans!!

And for those who are paying attention, yes, I was told that Standish was supposed to be being released today. However that's all turned into damp squib-ville by the looks of things. The page on the publishers site hasn't even got the ISBN on yet, let alone the price and links on where to buy it. I would have thought it would have been on Amazon in advance, but No. It's horribly horribly dissapointing and not at all the lovely experience I imagined it will be. I'm sure I'll be happy when it's finally released but really I feel a bit let down. *sniffs*

Oh, I know. One of them is my uncle. O_O He's traveled all over the country and across the Atlantic just to look at model railroads.

Mr. Stormheller is a railfan if you need any pointers. Our deal is he gets to buy hundreds of miniature train engines and decorate the house with them and I get to jet off to slash conventions all over North America. Could be worse, could be action figures. ;-)

I've just never understood it. *shakes head*

I'm wondering why on earth I plumped for this for the book....

Basically it gives the protagonists an excuse to go around together, which in 1960 they needed. But still. GEEK!

Am giggling so hard now....

*hums the tune happily*

No. They've said NOTHING. Not an email. Nothing. Most unimpressed.

I know nothing about this stuff, I don't know how different the systems are between the US and English. If he has any insider knowledge on late 50s early 60's english models I'd be very grateful!

And you both have hobbies. It's cute!

He knows a lot about Canadian trains in the 60s because that's what he's modelling. He's great with research, though, if you wanted to know something specific, I'll ask him. (He's not good with open-ended questions.) If you want to know about the model railfan's mindset for your characters, it probably won't come as a surprise that they're usually mildly OCD. But then that can be said of mediafen as well, right? ;-)
