Firsts!

As I said before, even if in the unlikliest of circumstances I get to be rich and famuz, I will never get these little firsts again. Yesterday I got an email from a complete stranger who wrote and told me that they'd just finished "Standish" and how much they enjoyed it, and whether there was going to be a sequel, particularly one with Fleury in, as he was their favourite character.

I know that in fandom I've had a lot of very nice feedback, and that several fandom friends have very kindly praised the book, but this was ... I can't explain it... It's the tiny tiny equivalent of someone stopping you in the street and saying "Oh - aren't you Erastes? I DID enjoy Standish."

I have to admit that I've never emailed an author and thanked him/her for their work, (mainly coz most of them are dead!!) but I am going to make an effort now. I wonder if the people I'm now going to target (GRRM, Diana Gabaldon) are so blase that they now take fanmail for granted. If I get a million others or if I never get another one, I'll treasure this one for ever! *clings* am now waiting for my first professional review and the first customer review on amazon. *stares at screen in bichon frise manner*

It's very bunnying too, as I'm now plotting "The Further Adventures of Fleury" [livejournal.com profile] dubaiyan will be pleased about this, at least!! I think that after the gloom and angst-ridden guilt of "Junction X" I shall need a good Gay Regency Romp through the New World with an outrageously badly behaved Irish Highwayman with an eye (and other bodily parts) for pretty men.

Stand!! and Deliver!!

That's so great to hear! Congrats to you for receiving your first fan-post.

I experienced something similar last week, when I read a story to a seminar group in which I was taking part. There is a difference if you get positive feedback from strangers (or people you don't know that well) - they won't tell you they liked it because they like you. So to earn their effort, your work had to be really good, hasn't it?

I still haven't found the time to order or let alone read your book, but I hope I will be able to do just that after New Year.

You rock!

Thanks! And yes, you are right - I have the most adorable flist but I don't imagine any of them will be honest with me and say "Good God this is puerile!" if it warranted it, so yes, praise from a stranger is good - even if it makes my betas feel rotten.

I've joined that creative writing workshop and i'm REALLY dreading that...

No worries about the book, it will still be there after the expensive holiday!

I think I will title my post, when I eventually will have the opportunity to read it: When you really really want to read a book. I'm not a quite girl (... ok woman, I pass the age for the "girl" thing) and always want all and now: good for the publishers, I buy the books in hardcover cause can't wait the paperbacks!

I'd write to your fave writers.
No, you don't get tired of it, IMHE, although I've never been in any danger of getting overwhelmed the way that some are.
So lovely, and very cheering, to hear from folks.

I very much doubt I'll ever be in the position to say OMG look at all these sacks of mail.... But I love my one.

Congratulations!! Those firsts are things to treasure but I doubt you'll ever get blase about such feedback. I suspect the author who does, is never going to keep up their standards of writing.

Well, I plan to write a rave review at amazon once I get my copy. Which should be in few days. :)

Particularly looking forward to it as Regency is my specialty (well, Romantic literature is), and few writers manage to do it correctly, which I know you will have done.

Also looking forward to the hot porn, of course. *g*
