Well I watched a film this afternoon - The Black Rose with Tyrone Power.(1950) and bloody hell. I mean I know I have slash goggles on half the time, but STILL. This was unbelievably slashy, I wish I'd videoed it - Orson Welles played one of Kubla Khan's warlords who Tyrone Power signed up with and at one point TP had to leave and head off to China and there was a MOST affectionate leave taking by Orson Welles - he said "I shall kill ten of them for every hair on your head if you are killed. I hate to see you go, I miss few men, but I shall miss you." Tyrone was being all bluff and jolly about it and I was half expecting him to punch Orson on the arm at one point, while Orson was CLEARLY having a UST moment.

Then at the end, Orson sends a letter to Tyrone and says "I wish you were back here."

!!!

There's also quite a lot of homoeroticsim between Tyrone and Jack Hawkins who he has a Great Friendship with throughout the entire film - there is a "Flossie", but you very much get the feeling that she's a last minute insert because someone read the script and thought "eek! Far too Gay!"

So much subtext.  However it seems to be me, as there's nothing on line about the homoeroticism.

Just me then.

*giggles*

It's not a great film, I warn you now. But at least someone else in the world will have seen it and will tell me I'm a nutter.

Try Captain Blood sometime.

I enjoy the older movies and this one sounds like great fun.

I am sure I've seen it (I'm SUCH an old film addict) but I don't remember it - I'll keep a look out for it. Thank you!

Captain Blood is sooo good with Errol Flynn...Tyrone's pirate movie is The Black Swan which also rocks. I have both on DVD.

I have loads of Tyrone's movies..one of my all time fave actors..also it was only a semi kept secret in Hollywood that Tyrone Power was Bi....

Is that true? Because I can't find any references to any of his boyfriends. Wikipedia (no stranger to inaccuracies, I'll admit) describes talk of Power's bisexuality as "post-death rumors".

I swear I have read it in one of more of my books on Old Hollywood and maybe in some of my bios. I will have to do some digging. I know it has been been a rumor for decades about him. *shrug* I love him either way...and I am eagerly awaiting for this to be released: Swashbuckler set!!

I was thrilled to see Jack Hawkins in it, I think it was probably the only Hollywood film he did.

Interesstingly (to me, anyway), my parents had this book, and it was one of my favorites to read when I was growing up, this and Sir Rogue, another historical novel (Elizabethen this time).

I only saw the film once, and don't recall the Wellesian homoeroticism, but I do recall thinking that the other two were *awfully* chummy.

This film is on the upcoming Tyrone Power Swashbuckler collection, but it's not one of my favorites. I loved the book, and the relationship between the Ty character and the woman was very, very sexy. Probably in today's eyes the relationship between Hawkins and Power in the film is viewed as homoerotic - frankly, I think you're giving the film too much credit for imagination not found in the script. The color is pretty but that's about it. The other four films in the collection are far superior.

oh it's not a good film at all - and as I said, I'm notorious for finding slash in such things as Father Ted and The Big Country, so I do tend to view the world in a more slashy vein than the rest of humanity.

But the Orson goodbye scene certainly made me sit up and take notice, as did the final argument between Tris and Power, I'll have to see it again and try and work out what is actually being said.

the collection sounds great! *rushes off to order*

And HellO!

I should have guessed it was a book and I should have guessed that several of my flist had read it!

Must check it out!

The Wells-ian thing is probably just my mind, but... well... when a man is all stiff and unable to articulate very well as he says goodbye to a most unfeasibly good looking bishi....

ok. just me. i get it.

I *knew* I'd read the book! It's by Thomas Costain (1945) and the girl in the story (Maryam) is the mother of Thomas a Becket via the hero. Does that come out in the movie at all? It's a fun book -- you should try it!

Good grief. No, that doesn't come out AT ALL.

I'll have to track it down, thanks!

I've never seen it, but now I'll have to. I love Tyrone Power in The Mask of Zorro, so I really won't mind watching another of his movies.
