Is it actually the same director?

Offhand, I'd rather see a good, classic script (back in the early days of film they had a lot of good writers) filmed with new techniques and actors than to have a good film tossed in a blender and turned into hash--which is all too often what happens.

It was bizarre! I'm a huge fan of the 1939 version, especially now it's been recoloured and I know it inside out, and I immediately spotted the "towing the boats up the Nile" shot which is iconic - so I went to have a look on IMDB and lo and behold it was Korda on both versions. Very very odd. And it says that he used the same script.

It doesn't compare with the earlier version.

But yes, I know what you mean, modern versions of classics can be dreadful. *coughItalianJobcough*
