I'm stunned. I have no idea who he is, but the idea that an educated man can have attitudes like that in this day and age is just appalling.

We have a channel for men, btw. It's full of bad films and wrestling. He's welcome to it.

Of course. Because women are supposed to be green slave girls who can't control their sexual urges.

I guess he missed the old ST episodes where Uhura got left in command?

He's a very popular amateur astronomer and the world's longest-running television presenter. He's been presenting The Sky at Night since 1957, so he's a Big Name in British popular culture.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patrick_Moore

He's got obnoxious right-wing views on other matters, but he's normally smart/polite enough to keep them to himself and like-minded friends.

Somebody give this fossil a glass of warm milk and tuck him in by the fire, please. He hasn't enough braincells left to be embarrassed.

Idiot

He was always like this but now he is left behind, no one listens to him and he grows unable to hide his true views in his old age...

If anyone significant listen to him I would be worried but since I find that very hard to believe I just feel sorry for him.

A BBC spokesman described Sir Patrick as being one of TV's best-loved figures and said his "forthright" views were "what we all love about him".

Excuse me, *I* have rather higher standards than that.

From: [identity profile] lee-rowan.livejournal.com
He's going to change "best-loved" for "less-loved" if he goes on like this. The sad thing is, there are a hell of a lot of low-intelligence, insecure jackasses who secretly agree with him, and this kind of rubbish makes them feel justified.

Hey, it could be worse. When I saw that quote in your LJ post, I was afraid you'd slipped your anchor.

It is sad. Some people can be absolutely brilliant in one respect and totally repulsive in another--but TV hardly ever shows the rotten side, and when it jumps out at you it's like finding a snake in your sock drawer.

But really, look at him. If his brain cells are as shabby as his outsides, he might have lost the part of his hard drive that had the "tact" program.

And of course the BBC once again, doesn't condemn such offensiveness - they just write it off as eccentricity, like they did that stupid newsreader a few months ago.

When will someone have the balls to stand up to this and point out that having women in authority is not PC - it's actually how the world works (not as often as it should do, but it wasn't Political Correctness that put a woman into the position of Prime Minister). And will someone please explain to Mr Moore that TV isn't there to pander to his idiotic ideas of how the world should be?

There's nothing loveable about being a sexist old fart, and nothing admirable about being 'forthright' when you're spouting drivel.

Date: 2007-05-09 12:42 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] lee-rowan.livejournal.com
They probably don't realize it's drivel.

This all reminds me of Edwin Newman's discussion of British public language code--if someone is described as 'tired' he's actually drunk, and 'very tired' means he's practically insensible. I expect "forthright" translates to "the old buzzard wouldn't know a civil tongue if he got it pickled on a sandwich."

I swear, it's who owns the media companies. Over here we've got news readers --on CNN, no less--kissing George Bush's rear and calling Hillary Clinton a bitch. They're scared little boys and smart, competent women make them incapable of reproducing. Which is good for the gene pool, but it does distress the poor wretches, and they get cranky.

Yes it's the "dear old duffer" affection that people will think that annoys me.

I swear, it's who owns the media companies.

Yes, but the BBC is publicly funded:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/running/

And I really don't know what this old fart is on about since if you look at the Executive Board
http://www.bbc.co.uk/info/running/executive/biographies.shtml

All but three members are men. So who these mythical wimmin are who are spoiling the silly old buggers cocoa and digestives, I have no idea. But then he probably wouldn't know a women if she sat on his face, so he might actually think 'Mark' is a girl's name.

The more I think about this story, the more angry I get. The discussion of this story
http://newsforums.bbc.co.uk/nol/thread.jspa?threadID=6289&&&edition=1&ttl=20070509075154
Coupled by the failure to condemn his remarks, makes me realise just how utterly sexist British society still is.
