The lovely tharain prompted this - he said that he uses Spam senders' names as character names! What a good idea! Thank you tharain!!

So I popped over to my (bulging) spam folder and found these - They are literally the first few on my spam folder and they are ALL suggestive of a Western I had no idea of writing. However the muse knows differently!

Eli Ellison - he's a quack doctor I think, with his heart in the right place. extracts teeth that sort of thing

Elba Henry - he's a bit of a wide boy. Owns a big ranch. isn't as rich as he'd like to make out. Meets Cody in Boston when on business. Never expects to see him again.

Dee Waters - She's the sherrif's daughter. Has a big crush on Elba

Dallas Ward - A blond entirely too looking gun slinger. Will do anything for a price. That's completely not his real name.

Elenora Watson - Widow of the last sherrif, who had a feud with Dallas. She knows that Dallas killed her husband but no-one belives her.

Jimmie Price - He HAS to be a newspaper man. Bright and wet behind the ears.

Devon Ramirez - Rival rancher to Elba. Dark, sinister and very very sexy.

Cody Coleman - The man that Elba loves. Comes to town, gets a job at Devon's ranch.

This was fun and the bunnies spawned themselves - have a go!

OMG that is such a cool idea! :D I'll have to remember that. For original characters I tend to come up with first names and the google them to see which last names pop up.

Oh, that's a brilliant idea! I've got a new character in my head that I know almost nothing about; maybe he'll get a name from the spam folder.

i've always wondered what those spam names were good for.

but question: is elba a man's name?

Ah yes. Elba Henry's father fought in the Napoleonic Wars, and named all his children accordingly. Elba is the younger brother of Trafalgar, Waterloo and Saint Helena Henry.

Hey, it could happen! ;)

the elder henry lied about his age and was in the army at a very young age. after the wars, facing poverty, he decided to sail for canada. finding no luck there, after two years, he moved south to the united states where, ten years later, he would meet his future wife, miss jenice little (bulk folder name).

does that work? :)

I offer you one of mine. "Doctor Charity," a woman with gumption, rejected by eastern medical schools who has come west to practice her calling as a healer. Sadly, nobody trusts women doctors in 18whatever, so she's had to resort to being the whore with the heart of gold.

I love it! Who knew something good could come out of spam? I'm going to give it a try myself.

Do! It would be good if some good came of spam - and let me know how it goes!

I've not had a chance to take more than a cursory look-see, but I did find "Micheal Bouchard", which brought to mind a young Frenchman, offbeat and friendly, open-minded and up for whatever adventures cross his path.

He now demands a story of his own!

I've done that myself, because some of those names can be unusual and colorful, even more so than the ones you've listed--although I always wonder, especially if I use the more unique spammy names, if someday the spammer won't come around and sue me for intellectual theft (assuming spammers possess an intellect to begin with). :)
Congratulations on your sale! Is it still as much of a thrill for you? I'm still floating on my first and only sale two years after the fact. (Hoping to have another sale shortly, hope hope).

Giggles! I'd love to know if they have any right to jump on one for intellectual theft!

And yes, it's still blissful. I was talking to gehayi yesterday and said OMG how i was leaping around like a loony and that I hope that I never got blase about it.

I wondered if Asimov ever got blase and she said that he had - and he got rejected by a newbie editor once - went away, rewrote the story and made it good then wrote and thanked the editor!

I save spamnames, too, though only the really silly ones. Such as:

Sanders A. Santana
England Jonathan (Indiana Jones' cousin)
Zulaykha Esterly
Reggie K. Emery
Wu Martini (has heard all the booze jokes)
Lim Pundt (Always being called "Limp" by his buddies
Antwan Berger (Pronounces it "Ber-zherr"
Hussain Chadwick (Offspring from one of those British Raj/Dark Eastern Beauty romances..)

My favorite is this one--and the teaser tag was good, too. But not good enough for me to risk opening the email.

Vladimira Galbreath
(subject) Ashley Woodford, 21, has traded her 32-kilogram ruck sack for a pair of scissors

I wonder what Ashley is doing now, free of that heavy rucksack, running merrily through the woods with her scis-- whoops!
