I watched Interview with the Vampire last night. I'd only ever seen the film once before, when it first came out and my gaydar was definitely off back then- but bwuh? How did I miss the homoerotic? I haven't read the book, and really don't want to buy it so I'm going to order it from the library.

Banderas comes a millimetre from kissing Pitt. *sigh*

REMAKE PLEASE! (same actors would be good, too) If Banderas had made that film now, he'd be laughed off the screen but OMG ... I was convinced back then, and was convinced last night too. THE HOTNESS!!

I also have to say - Kirsten Dunst? Wow - what a performance!

And also - how is it that everyone had a good hair day except Brad?

Managed my 1000 words yesterday. Go me. 1022 to be precise.

And I'd just like to say, work colleague, that noisy eaters should be killed. In inventive ways.

The homoerotic is much more pronounced in the book, actually. I seem to remember it was either the first time or close to it that I ran across overt homoeroticism in a book (arguably it had turned up in other things, but certainly not like that).

As for Kirsten Dunst, every time I see her, some part of my brain sees Claudia. It's moderately terrifying, but it says volumes about how beautifully she embodied that character.

I have wondered how they managed to make Brad Pitt unattractive in that film. That's something of a feat. His hair was all wrong.

With poison-tipped anteaters.

We have our own IWtV story. The movie hit cable when my oldest was a toddler. I was watching it and she wandered in during the scene where Louis, Lestat and Claudia are walking the streets of New Orleans.

She took one look at the screen and said "That me." She pointed at Lestat and said "That Daddy." (my husband is blond) Then at Louis, "That Uncle Darren."

Her father overheard and said "Yes, baby. you're right. Claudia has two daddies."

(as for Banderas? He totally sold it. He came off insanely sexy.)

Thing is, it doesn't need a remake. The homoerotica is all subtext, barely, sub, but still nothing explicit. It was enough to profoundly disturb me for about 10 years (I was repressing). It becomes text in _The Vampire Lestat_ when Lestat moves to Paris with his boyfriend.

There is out and out gay affairs in the book if I am remembering right. Antonio was so wrong for that part. Armand is a young boy who was seduced, fell in love, and then turned by his master during the Renaissance.

Anyway...Kirsten was 11 when she did that movie...her first movie..and she was soooo good.

Also I stayed at Oak Alley which is north of New Orleans that was used as Louis' plantation...beautiful, eerie, place...

Oh, and the movie has been Bunny's theme movie ever since.
She recently did a very good music vid for it:

I'm glad I saw the film first and only then read the book. If it had been the other way round, I probably couldn't have enjoyed the film nearly as much as I did... but now I can separate the two. Antonio is gorgeous in the film, but he's so NOT Armand.

My gaydar was off then too....but it's very on now. That film is soo good. I really should watch it again.

Weeee for your 1022 words! I hope to do some today too. Editing the most hateful of my chapters *pout*

Noisy eaters who do it with their mouths open...gahhh! *sticks their head in a crisp packet*

I love that movie so much, I have watched it too many times. Everyone's so hot, and yeah, that almost kiss is the hottest scene! Though my personal favourite is Lestat. Me and my bad boy syndrome. ;-)

You missed the homoerotic? HOW?

Remember the bit with Pitt and Cruise and the bloody curtains, in the beggining of the movie? I actually tried to crane my neck to see past the damm things. ^_^

God, I read the book and knew there was quite a bit of homoeroticism before I knew the word or had it on my radar!

All of Ann Rice's vampire books (and other books, until she recently "found Jaysus") are homoerotic. Although once they actually BECOME vampires they are incapable of having sex, the intimate relationships are almost always between the male vampires. They kiss, suck one another's blood, sleep together, set up house together, and are lovers in every sense of the word except the actual physical act of sex. That's one reason why Rice's books have such a huge following among gay readers.

I've always thought it was interesting that she makes the vampires such sensuous creatures that many people who read the books think they are having sexual intercourse. However, various passages in the books show that they cannot function as humans in that way, just as they can't eat food or drink anything other than blood. But their form of "sex" comes in exchanging blood with one another, and those scenes are usually between male vampires, and are very erotic and sexual.

Rice isn't a particularly good writer, but she was creative. My favorite book of hers is "Cry to Heaven," which is a historical novel about castrati in 18th century Italy. It's nicely researched, and unlike the vampires, the castrati do have sex, usually with men.

Interview is pretty much what turned me to writing. I HATED the ending and I so wanted Louis & Lestat to be together so I did the ending my way.

The only thing about reading the book first was that I kept thinking that Antonio and Kirsten were "too old" because the book character ages/appearances were in my head.

Forgot

It's weird when you see movies with actors when they were kids practically performing better than they do now. Anna Paquin was awesome in The Piano and then seemed to get unremarkable as she grew up. How does that work? LOL.
