The Golden Compass was incredible. It had the same effect on me as did LOTR's because it was like someone had put my vision on the screen. Even the town where Iorek was drinking himself to death was exactly how I imagined it.  Kerry really enjoyed it, because the film cleverly plays itself down on the Religion must die motif and is just a great spectacle with a smidge of organised religion and a soupcon of hints about dust=puberty=original sin which only really resonated because I knew it was there.  She was horrified at the Intercession (as well she might) and we discussed daemons all the way back to the car.

"What about if you don't have a personality?"
"That could be tricky.  Steve Davis would have problems"
"Eeek, yes."
"Perhaps his daemon would be a glass of water."
*general sniggering*

Then home to Heroes end of season one which was everything it should be, and made me very happy, but of course I'm worrying about Nathan.

However I do have to say - even when Peter realised that it was going to be him blowing up  - why didn't he just think "well, no worries, I'll just go into orbit."

Silly me. That would mean that most of the series would have been scrapped!  And er - HELLO!  Didn't anyone think of cutting Gabriel's head off???? I DID!!!

But who was going to get close enough to cut Sylar's head off? Hiro managed to stick him with a sword but then ended up in 17th century Japan.

Volume two just ended which was waaaay too short for me but the strike:( Anyway I hope you enjoy when you watch it. I liked all of it and it moved right along for me and things got resolved pretty quickly. All I will say about that.

:)

and I really really can't wait to see the Golden Compass.

Well he was lying on the floor all the time Peter was nearly exploding, if Hiro had just teleported back to the plaza rather than sodding off to play Kensei, then he could have done it.

He's completely my favourite. And strangely, Gabriel.

There's no hot man on the same par as Locke Sawyer.

I heard people in the cinema going "I don't see what all the fuss is about" but it was obvious they hadn't read the books. It's a distilled version, that's sure, (and hardly surprising) but it does work and it encapsulates everything that's good about the books. I can't wait for number 2.

I've read the books and enjoyed them a lot. So that's the first film in another trilogy? I can't wait for Will, then! I loved his character and Lyra's so very much in the books.

some fans were all "But Peter couldn't control his abilities enough!", but obviously the writers just wanted to rip my heart out over Nathan :/

i also thought Nikki [or whoever, but she had the massive metal bar?] decapitating Sylar would have been poetic justice given his penchant for brains. meh.

might save up for G. Compass DVD...

yes, Nikki could have smashed his head in when he was down. or when Hiro stabbed him.

You should see it on the big screen, truly. It's worth it just for the bears.

Now look here, missy. Steve Davis has a personality as big as... as big as... Belgium! and I will not sit here and have him made mock of. *g*

Comtemplating seeing this for our family film this Christmas - will hubby understand it? (He just about coped with LOTR!)

Ooooh, very happy to hear about Golden Compass, as I'm planning to see it tomorrow or Saturday and was a bit worried after hearing rumours about bad scriptwriting.

And I remember my main reaction to Nathan and Peter being: NOOOO!!! Nathan!!!!! (He's one of my favourites, which probably demonstrates how strange I am.) Must catch up on the second series when I get home...

About Peter, I think he can't use two powers in the same time. I don't know if it's my own canon or confirmed somewhere, but in Five Year Later ( or whatever the title was), Future!Peter had to stop using invisibility to use the telekinesis, and he stop using that when he froze the time.

So the exploding is taking control of the rest.

Am only now learning that it comes from a book. *Feels a bit stupid*
See, that's one thing I love about my flist - learning about books!

I really want to see the Golden Compass; the previews were most promising.
Two people I know have seen it and all they were talking about was he fact that Nicole Kidman apparently had enjoyed her Botox too much. Who cares.

Good to hear about GC - I expect we'll see it this weekend as part of our anniversary celebration. Was there a Prince Caspian trailer at yours? I've heard they're showing it here.

Finally saw the movie...

Wow, It's been a while since I've seen a good fantasy flick. Well done. Nicole Kidman gave a great icy performance - Slap that monkey!
Hadn't read the books. Will have to now. I'll just add them to the growing list of stuff to read.
I was browsing on Amazon, looking through the customer reviews of "His Dark Materials" Trilogy and was surprised to find that while most of the reviews gave 5 stars, there were quite a few 1 star reviews as well - there appears to be some sort of organized boycott by religious zealots who believe that Pullman is trying to brainwash kids into atheism! Holy demon! People get worked up over the silliest things. Hey, I enjoyed the Narnia books too, but guess what? They didn't make me believe in Aslan (or God, whatever!)

I'm glad you liked it. The bears rock.

To be honest though, the films really played down the anti-religious theme, tis a lot more tub thumpingly obvious in the books, and far more overt than even Lewis managed. But, sheesh, is really THAT influenced by fantasy books?
