Jan. 22nd, 2008 02:42 pmCity of Vice - Channel Four (UK) Last Night - Privilege of the Sword
If you DIDN'T see City of Vice, and you live in the UK and are interested in gay history then you missed a treat last night and should definitely try and catch it on Channel Four's On Demand service. It dealt with the Molly Houses and predictably had a sad ending, but for my money it was well done, and took not a little research from Ricktor Norton's books and websites. Enough snoggage and sexual content *cough* I mean, enough historical content to keep me happy, although yah boo sucks to Iain Glen for not making John Fielding tempted by the yumminess of nubile young men. Prude! I could happily ignore historical accuracy in that manner...
In other news - Chiaroscuro is to be released Friday (god willing) more news when I've got it.
And, sadly, I'm not terribly impressed with Privilege of the Sword. And this isn't just because there's no m/m main plot - god, I'm not that shallow. I'm just not convinced by Uber-Sue Katherine who got good enough to win a duel in a matter of months. Sorry, but even a couple of years of individual training with St Vier wouldn't achieve that, and she only trains with him for a short period of time. She actually has the gall to say that she would have stabbed him through the heart had she not realised what she was doing at the last minute. Sheesh *rolls eyes * It's also got a bit flabby and dull around the page 200 mark - I don't give a stuff about Artemesia to be frank. I'm intrigued by Marcus and can't imagine what Lucius' story is, but I'm not that bothered. I can't help but be completely won over by Alec, though, as he's behaving just as the city wants him too, whilst all the time, actually reforming matters, and gleaning control and power over the city too. I can't hold out hope for him and Richard (don't tell me) because the gulf between them is too wide. Diana gave him the Dukedom and that was a nasty thing to do - and now ... how could either of them live in each other's worlds. *sniffles* I tell you, I'm nailing my hands to the desk to prevent myself writing Alec/Richard fanfic!

And I agree about PotS. I found myself sort of skimming to get to any mention of Alec or Richard. Not a bad book, but it lacked the power of the first, I think.
