Anyone got any ideas for music i could use for the book trailer (don't get excited, i'm only looking in advance) for Transgressions (English Civil War) - Is Bach or Handel far far too late? Something stirring, sad or emotional? Purcell?

Bueller?

Oh and I made a sale yesterday too, but I'd already posted about the novella so I just shoved it on the website blog instead, I resold "Drug Colours" to mroctober's Lethe Press for their Best Gay Short Stories. Am chuffed about this on many levels.

What was Bueller's music like?

What exactly are you looking for? Pieces themselves of the mid 1650s? Or composers and go from there? Unfortunately, Bach and Handel are too late and so to is Purcell (He's really on the cusp being born in 1659 but you can fudge that one a bit easier).

And do you want strictly English composers or anything of the early baroque/late renaissance?

I don't think it needs to be OF the era - not exactly - and anyway - heh. T'is only a book trailer and no-one watches them, but something stirring, that excites like the Standish trailer did (for me, anyway)

Girl, does that mean you're finally smacking Transgressions into shape for PD Publishing?

You better, or I'll have to smack you myself. Ignore the fact that I'm in California. I'll find a way to get to your corner of the world, missie.

As for theme songs, how about "Sonnerie de Ste-Geneviève du Mont-de-Paris" by Marin Marais. It's a bit on the moody, gothic-y side with the repetitive bass line and the viol. It was written around the 1720s, so I don't know if it'll work with what you need, but that's as close as I can get. :) Marais was a contemporary of Purcell but outlived him. Otherwise, Purcell would be good, too.

If you're looking for music that was written around the English Civil War, Jean-Baptiste Lully would be the best candidate I can think of (though he wrote his music a few years after the war, i.e., the 1650s and beyond).

Not yet - I'm churning out a short for submission today, then i want to finish JX - THEN I'll work on transgressions. I'm thinking of taking two weeks off sometimes soon to do some serious work.

I like the sound of your suggestion, I'll biff around and see if I can find it.

Thanks!

Montiverdi is probably the most famous early Baroque (1600-1650) composer, he's certainly the only one I can recall off the top of my head.

Re music to go with the English Civil War: "The World Turned Upside Down." I believe there's also something named "Cromwell's March" or some such. There must be a website, not to mention a group that probably dresses up for relevant anniversaries (death of King Charles I?).

Oh believe me, I've just written an entire book on the era, if there's a website out there I havent been on, I don't know about it. I've probably contacted every single re-enactment group in existence - I was just hoping that someone would come out with something and save me hunting all over again.

I would agree on Purcell, although I can think of two albums that have a nice variety of things -- they're both film scores with lots of classical pieces included: Restoration (unsurprisingly, 1660s) and Tous les matins du monde (Louis XIV, not sure of exact dates). The latter is mostly Marin Marais and Jean-Baptiste Lully, and the former has lots of Purcell and a few other people floating about. I could upload Restoration for you, but it would take till tomorrow or so.

Giovanni Gabrieli's stuff would have been known by the time of Trans. There's some lovely brass antiphonal music of his on a CD I've got that I could upload. Also Monteverdi is smack in that period. Purcell is a little late, I think. There's a small article on early Baroque music that might give you some ideas.

Congrats again on the sale!

Can't help with anyone earlier, but the two pieces that spring to mind for Bach and Handel are the first movement of Bach's Suite no. 1 for cello in G Major and Handel's The Arrival of the Queen of Sheba. Very different moods, but I thought I'd throw them out there!

Congrats on another sale :).

Congrats on the sale! Btw, I just finished reading "Show, Don't Tell" from this month's Men Magazine. Loved it. Your voice is so strong in this piece. It's a very hot story!

Take care,

You're welcome. Yeah, I was excited when I opened my issue and saw your name in the contents. I flipped right to it. There's a lovely illustration by Kent accompanying your piece.

Oh, and I've met writers at conferences like you've described: those so intent on convincing you of their brilliance that they neglect to inquire about your work. What a dead-on observation.

Congrats again on this. It's a great story!

Thomas Tallis (1515-1585) is known as the father of English cathedral music. William Byrd (1539?-1623) was Tallis' pupil. He composed both for Catholic liturgy and the Church of England.

Naxos (http://www.naxos.com/) is a good source for early music recordings.
