I actually hadn't heard of the book, and I'm a bit ashamed about that - I'd seen "The Omega Man" (although I really don't remember any vampires....) but didn't know that it was based on this novella.  I haven't seen the recent Will Smith film, but from the trailers I saw it looks NOTHING like the book.  And I bet that Will Smith saves the world, the dog and the girl. Hmmmm.  Very good book though, well worth a read if you haven't read it before, don't be put off by the film!

It's snowing even harder today (despite the weather forecast saying that it would overnight and then would be sunny....) We had four inches overnight, and it's still snowing like mad, with no sign of a break in the sky.  I'm going to drive to dad's, even though I know he'll try and put me off - it's only 20 miles.  And before you all start saying "What? What's she worried about? 20 miles is nothing!!"  Yes, 20 miles is nothing on a main, nicely gritted road.  But I live in the middle of NOWHERE. I have to drive about five miles on single track (e.g. only room for one car, and if another one comes in the other direction there are passing places) roads which are unlikely in the extreme to be gritted. Specially over Easter.  They grit the roads when the school bus trundles through the village, but the kids are on holiday.  But I will have my mobile phone with me, and I do have the AA. I know it sounds like worrying over nothing, but we don't have the same efficient organisation about weather that other countries have.  Hell, we once had major train breakdowns because of "leaves on the line"  - and that was in.. um.. AUTUMN - so it was hardly an unexpected event - like blizzards at Easter.  ETA Dad just rang, he doesn't want me to risk it, so not going!

The Snucius have been crossing their legs, because they haven't seen snow before and they both rushed out a minute or so ago, and have just barged back in with snowflakes on whiskers. (Isn't that a favourite thing?)

I really like the Vincent Price version The Last Man On Earth. Richard Matheson is a kickass writer and has done a lot for TV including the famous gremlin on plane eppy of The Twilight Zone.

I know the movie Somewhere in Time is based on one of his short stories too. Kickass writer!

(and from what I understand the Will Smith version is not perfect but isn't a happy ending at all but I have yet to sit down and watch it.)

Wow you are getting a bit of snow and "gritted" never heard it put like that. But yes, if your roads aren't "salted" at all I would not drive either. I take it since this doesn't happy a lot no plowing either. (The trucks this year caught and ripped up the edge of my front yard this year, turf everywhere:P)

Thank you for review :)
Due to film whenever checked sci-fi books, I skipped this book :D

From the comment above I remembered a episode of "Twilight Zone" I have seen just once when I was 10yd or so. It was so impressive that I couldn't forget it. ("Her Pilgrim Soul" is title, but I remembered barely two words Pilgrim and Soul.) What I couldn't remember is in it my cult idle actor(and must be favorite of Sam Raimi) Gary Cole was playing!
You never return empty-handed from Erastes' blog :D

Dad just rang, he doesn't want me to risk it, so not going!

Fortunately. He knows road's condition :)

Yes, I thought the film might put people off, but it's very interesting, although not a happy ending, that's for sure.

Love Gary Cole!

Sorry for misspelling idle-idol (searching place to hide) :D

I'm thinking to see it this evening or tomorrow.

Last Man On Earth...

Vincent Price's 'Last Man on Earth' was also based on that novella, but I didn't realize about 'I Am Legend' which I haven't seen. Price's film scarred me for LIFE! I watched it when I was about ten and slept with the lights on for months. That is one seriously scary, scary story, not just because of the whole plague thing but because of the isolation and despair. (probably a personal bugaboo) I started watching the Omega Man once and had a flashback. Didn't realize it was a remake until it was too late...

Stay safe, hope the cats don't explode. (My dog won't go out if the sprinklers are on, much less if there's any sort of weather. Which, I'm actually sorry to say, there never is.)

So jealous of your snow! It tried again this afternoon - I took a couple of pictures of what had tried to settle at about 2pm, though it was a cross between pellet-y snow and soft hail. But by quarter to 3 it had all vanished again. Grrr.

Still a snow-free zone - no surprises there!

Do you realise you have more snow than Yorkshire???

They don't make snow like they used to!

Four inches of snow!?
WE'd all be slipping around off int eh gutters round here. Well, except the folks who go up for skiing in Tahoe and drive in plowed junk all the time.
Narrow one-lane roads are nothing to sneeze at for risks, especially when you can have black ice involved.
