[livejournal.com profile] gehayi was just saying that if my cat Severus was a fictional character (life imitating art, imitating life etc) he'd be in something by Bronte or Austen.

I did a description of him which made us both laugh - and I think this might be a very good way to create new characters!  I can actually see this young man.

Severus: 1850. Norfolk
Slender and tall, Severus lives in the country with his mother and his sister.  He's slightly nervous, affectionate and clumsy but is attractive in an unusual way with large hands and feet.  He has a fondness for the outside, bird and butterfly watching in particular and takes long walks daily alone no matter what the weather. He often returns home soaked and muddy to the despair of his family. He gets on very well with women but is wary of strange men. He's devoted to his sister, and behaves much younger than his years in a very boyish fashion when he's around her.  When in company  he tends to have an inappropriate sense of humour and will eat too much to cover his embarrassment. He had a brother to whom he was devoted, and who he sadly lost when he was younger. Although he seems to have forgotten him, sometimes he jumps to attention when he hears the door latch sound.

Lili: 1920s
Lili is extremely beautiful in an unusual way. With hair so white as to be almost silver and with bright green eyes she gives off an other-worldly look - sometime seeming to hold secrets that she'll never tell.  Probably because of her heritage, she's a little bit fey - hearing and seeing things in her house that no-one else can see. She was born in Spain and moved to the East of England as a young girl.  She's never quite acclimatised to England and feels the cold keenly, even on days in the summer when the sun doesn't shine.  Her favourite room in the house is the morning room where she sits with the sun on her face.   She lives with her adopted brother who she teases remorselessly and barely tolerates.  She's possibly agoraphobic (caused by a childhood incident where she was locked in a coal shed for months) and never leaves the house, even on the warmest days. She's very chatty and seems unable to keep her opinions to herself.

I challenge you: Describe your pet and create your own character - doesn't have to be a historical one, of course.

I knew they'd come in useful for something. I'll certainly use the SEverus character in a book I have planned - have to change his name though.

Here is a pic of Khun Chaay Cat (Prince/minor noble Cat)
http://1happyturtle.com/KCCat/6659.jpg

Khun Chaay Cat in 19th century Siam was born of a concubine and a nobleman but was well educated in Bangkok was later sent to conduct government work in the rugged Northeast of the kingdom.

Like many wealthy Siamese men he enjoyed hunting wild beasts and accumulating women for his collection.

Arrogant, calculating and highly detail oriented he still maintains a staff of 3 humans to wait on him. His human serfs must remember one golden rule when attending to him: our needs are always second to his.

Khun Chaay is very affectionate however he punishes rough handling with a bite or scratch. Should you refuse to cuddle with him, Khun Chaat will glance at you and ignore you for the rest of the day. He'll only consume occasional bits of tuna, salmon or boiled chicken only if it has been finely chopped and waits for his face to be wiped with a moist cloth by sitting on the sink.

We believe he has been listening to media emphasizing global warming and will turn off the fan by pressing the off button when he feels that we humans have adequately enjoyed the artificial breeze.

All beds, chairs, the sofa and computer keyboard are his territory.

I'm thinking of him as being rather studious, a budding etymologist or something. There's that nice gamekeeper who allows him access to the neighbouring woods. Always with a notebook and a net - and with pockets of samples.

Sophie doesn't remember either of her parents. She and her brother were found in someone's backyard, and brought to a woman's house, where they lived with a number of other orphans - though they always kept to themselves. No traditional beauty (the Hitler mustache is rather off-putting) Sophie is possessed of alluring amber eyes and a high spirit. She is the queen of all she surveys, be it 200 lb dog (inferior species!) or pampered Balinese princess cat. (There's a rumor Sophie drove the Balinese to madness, which she neither confirms nor denies.) In her youth, Sophie was quite the acrobat, but she's getting a little chunky.

Skittish around strangers (especially two-legged ones) Sophie does enjoy the occasional cuddle - on her terms, naturally. Her longtime companion is an elderly gentleman named William, who was crippled at birth. As this William possesses no fortune whatsoever, one must assume that Sophie genuinely cares for him, though she sometimes plays too rough and sends Will running to his mommy.

I was very tickled by this so here's my efforts>>>

Puss: 1970

Usually fond of taking life in the slow lane, Puss Kat can be found chilling out to the tuneful warbling of feathered ladies (and gentlemen). His distinctive strawberry-blonde locks give the impression he may be shy of the heat of the day. However, the exact opposite is known to be the truth. His tiger feet often decide to take him to, and have him relax, in the most radiant of surroundings. During the day it is obvious that he is more the great contemplator but by night his vocalisations air his need for sustenance of the groovy kind (read: gravy). He has a particularly liking for wildlife not to mention vegetation. He has a particular passion for fruit especially when it is travelling at great speed before him. When the mood takes him, this cool dude adores being the life and soul of the party and his conversational flow, at times, can be impossible to extinguish. He is the great manipulator of the household and has lived his life a few times round already ... even though he has never learnt a thing.

Spenser (icon) is a philosophical gentleman. Now twelve, he was orphaned at an early age, then rescued and adopted into a varied family. His first love, Tigerboy, died when Spenser was barely grown, but he now lives with four companions, and (despite a surgical event that would have crippled a lesser fellow), is often caught in flagrante with both Mr. Pipps and Ms Peabody. His advances toward the elderly Madame Snoot have been repulsed, she being in her 19th year and disinclined toward such frivolity. His friendship with the other four-legged lady of the house has always been platonic, as she is of the canine persuasion and entirely too tall to excite his amorous instincts.

Spenser employs both a housekeeper and a breadwinner. He is a benevolent tyrant, insisting only upon his right to occupy the lap of his housekeeper when she is at the keyboard or siting at table. He is a sociable fellow, and would enjoy time outdoors rather than on the screened porch; his favorite hobby is murdering moles but he would be willing to tackle mice or even a chipmunk.

Daisy is a rather feckless girl. Orphaned at an early age, she ran wild for quite some time and never accustomed herself to living in what many would consider a civilized manner. She has a short cap of dark hair covering her head and ears and hazel eyes, and is far from elegant, favoring a white dress covered in orange, grey and black patches. Regrettably, she is not particularly intelligent and is apt to get lost inside her own home. She also runs headfirst into doors and falls downstairs so easily that the servants have become accustomed to picking her up and carrying her everywhere, lest she do herself a damage. She likes a playhouse on the grounds of her current residents, and would like it all the better if she could live in it full time, though the servants have explained to her that this is not possible. She mislikes most of the food served to her, as she would much prefer to dine on game that she poached late at night or early in the morning.

Conrad is an elegant gentleman with black hair, golden eyes, and an impeccable black suit. Though he began life as the youngest son of a cruel mother who had neither time nor food to spare, he was adopted at an early age and treated as the only scion of a noble house.

He moves through the house with a silent grace, rarely speaking unless he absolutely has to. He dislikes the heat, choosing to slumber in cool, shadowy places during the day and slipping out at night for various duels and romantic assignations. Occasionally, he goes hunting, but he has found that the servants are most unappreciative of his efforts when he brings game home.

He loathes his middle name, Constance, and if referred to by his full name, he will stalk off to his study and not be seen save at meals.

Giving it a go...

Trixie: 1920s

This wide-eyed debutante is the archetypal Blonde: open green gaze, melodic voice, and, alas, not much common sense. Her parents died when she was a baby, and her rough start in the orphanage rendered her wary of most men. A family of eccentrics adopted her when she was fifteen, along with the meanest girl in the orphanage, Adalyne (aged eighteen or so), who learned to fight out on the mean streets.

Trix is most loyal to Auntie Cassandra, who needs a companion more often than she thinks. She has gradually warmed up to Grandfather, but other men send her running for her rooms. For this reason, she is not precisely thrilled when Auntie brings home prospective husbands. The gardener, a kind fellow who's not all there himself, taught her the ins and outs of the estate; from time to time, they will hunt together. He treats her as if she were his daughter, though sometimes a frisson of mutual attraction shoots through the air between them.

When she's out late, she sneaks in through Auntie's window. Auntie is gracious enough not to yell too loudly.

Venus was born to a fine old family of impeccable breeding, but was rejected because she was born with a deformed leg. Cruelly, she was named Venus de Milo in jest. While Venus was still a baby, a servant girl sneaked her out of the house to show her off to those who might adopt her; the ploy worked, and when Venus was scarcely weaned, she was taken in by a new family. It was just as well that this happened; had it not, the servants of her family would have had her put to death rather than had it noised about that her family had spawned an imperfect child.

Venus's new family adored her and would hear no nonsense about her imperfections. When a doctor suggested that she would not live two months and that she would be better off dead rather than alive and crippled, the family immediately withdrew...and found another doctor.

Venus has grown up to be a healthy, happy girl with black hair, brown eyes and a joyous smile. She favors a white dress with black spots and black boots. She has a rather bouncy gait when she walks...but strangely, her lame leg in no way hampers her when she wishes to run. Though small for her age, she is fierce in defense of her family and their land, and once faced down a trespassing German fellow ten times her size.

She openly likes the scion of the house, Conrad. Conrad, for his part, treats her with studied indifference when anyone is watching...and profound and brotherly affection when he thinks no one is.

This is the cutest meme ever!!!

title or descriptiontitle or description

Hexe, 1910:

Madame Hexe is a portly lady, slowly advancing in years, who lives alone in her over-stuffed mansion, surrounded by servants who know they best cater to her every whim, or they'll be made to suffer. Her family has scattered when she was a very young girl, but she's never missed them - they've all been a bit déclassé, really.

Madame favours voluminous gowns in shades of grey and ochre, which complement her hair and lend her an air of distanced dignity. A dedicated huntress in her younger years - for sport, not for the table, it goes without saying - she has long since given herself over to calmer pleasures. She enjoys good meals, good wine and restful naps in various pleasant locations - her very own four-poster, plush chairs, or out on the balcony enjoying the sun. While she's not too fond of the great outdoors, she enjoys traversing the gardens with a servant in tow, for protection and to carry her parasol.

Madame Hexe never married, though not for lack of offers as, despite her years, she is quite striking. Males (or females) daring to seek her company, however, are quickly put into their place by her sharp and acerbic wit. Her neighbours prefer to greet her in passing rather than attempting to visit. Left to her own devices and to her attentive servants, she lives the pleasant life of a superior recluse and radiates an occasional grumpy charm.

Unbound by any time-frame but her own: Her Majesty Zelda, the Queen of All Evil, is co-ruler of a small domain containing many fuzzy diversions, good views of lesser creatures in need of killing, and two devoted—though far from perfect—servants. Appearing prosperous and lazy, Zelda is quick to mete out punishment for slights both real and imagined; she often directs her displeasure at her discalceate co-regent for daring to breathe the royal air. Zelda is fond of keeping her servants warm when they've done her a service, and she is always ready to instruct them as to what she requires.

2008: Barefoot, Queen of the Internet, is ruler of a modern domain of computers, gadgets, and cords of all kinds. She has marked them each as her own and guards them jealously from Zelda the Fat, who suffers delusions of queendom. An understanding ruler, in her way, The 'Foot prevents Zelda from coming to harm by refusing her access to scratching posts and high places. In recent months, however, she has permitted her "co-ruler" access to the bathroom watering hole (this may or may not have something to do with the mysterious bite wound found not long ago on her belly). Barefoot enjoys her servants when they sit still, especially when covered by something soft and warm, and she's gained the title of the Mighty Fighting 'Foot in the ongoing and vicious Tuna Wars.
