I challenge you - is your library smaller than mine? Mobile libraries don't count (they'd be bigger, anyway.)

Reading haul:

The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde
Strangers(homosexual love in the 19th century) Graham Robb
Bridge of Birds by Barry Hughart
Gone to ground by John Harvey
Queer London by Matt Houlbrook
Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin

Ooh yes, http://www3.hants.gov.uk/library/library-finder/north-baddesley-library.htm. I think it might be a fraction smaller but have no photographic evidence.

Ooh, I loved The Eyre Affair, especially since I wrote loads of stories about 'book-jumping' when I was about 12. I'm baffled as to why Jasper Fforde is shelved with mainstream fiction in Waterstones, though. To me, what he's writing is sci-fi, pure and simple. He's like the bastard child of Phillip K Dick and Terry Pratchett.

I'm looking forward to that one, particularly!

Muwhahahaha!

We have a huge one in Norwich, but Norwich is half an hour away and then hell to get into, being medieval - so it's cheaper to order books and have them sent out.

Oh, we have the smallest, although I can't get a photo until next Tuesday, when it opens: it is a 8' X 12' room -- with NO NONFICTION whatsoever!

Well , that's reassuring!! What annoys me is that I have to pay such a lot of money to have books sent from other libraries, as none of the books I want are ever there. They have two racks of Cookson, one of Grisham and one solitary copy of Da Vinci Code....

Does that reflect the average reader? Who knows what motivates those who supply the library shelves.

Anyhoo I has pic: http://www.northbaddesleyvillage.co.uk/5com-library.html - the library is that bottom flat so floor area wise it's probably the same, total volume must be smaller.

Well I was exaggerating...

That definitely wins the prize for the FUGLIEST library....

:(

Oh, I know uglier, but can't get a piccy (yes, yes, I know - empty boats, but Lordshill is so ugly it would crack the camera).

Romsey Library is cute, the piccy doesn't do it justice. All refurbished and pretty inside.

I am heading off the library this afternoon with the horde to turn in their Summer Reading booklets (I mark down how many books I have read or in K's case she has read this summer for prizes!)

and it is 3 floors:)

*cheers the Eyre Affair!*

The whole Thursday Next series is absolutely brilliant. Particularly for those of us who are literature hounds, the way everything is interwoved. It's absolutely brilliant. XD I can't wait to hear what you think of it!

And our one library might be smaller. It's seriously a space in a shopping plaza. Sadly, I don't have a picture. But it's small enough that you have to go outside to change your mind...

It's about the size of the one in the town where I grew up - no picture, the building has probably been torn down by now--it was a turn of the last-century storefront, maybe 40 feet wide and 60 deep... but it had the complete Sherlock Holmes collection and lots of horse stories, so I was content.

I think my library I went to as a child may be smaller. I don't think it is anymore, but the photos on this page must have been taken at one end looking right down at the other, so it's still small.

No way! It looks HUGE in comparison!

:0 Mine would only have room for one strip neon light...

It may be small, but it looks entirely defensible during a zombie attack*, and that's what truly matters, isn't it?

* Do zombies climb? The skylights might pose a bit of a problem.

Yes, but then not many people would be able to get on the roof!
Zombie librarians... They'd KNOW which brains were best...
