Well, I just finished my first ever sci-fi story and I'm quite bouncy about it. It's for Greg Herren's sci-fi anthology "Distant Horizons" (or more accurately for SUBMISSION to Distant Horizons...). But as flipping usual, I prove to myself that I'm not a natural short story writer, I just get too involved. Now I want to know how my boys ended up owning their own space ship, where they met etc etc. And what happens next....

What interests me is that [livejournal.com profile] rwday told me that sci-fi is actually more accepting of gay characters than main stream. *blinks* I did not know this. I don't think I have the talent/maths/science to be able to write sci-fi as a main genre - but it's good to know that if I don't get accepted to Distant Horizons then I might be able to find other homo-friendly sci-fi markets around.

Standish News: I heard from the publishers, and the second edit is ready to begin! squeee! I do hope it's a little less painful than the first one...

Does anyone know if there's a Historical Writers' Association? I can't find one and it's very annoying!

Da Vinci Code: I hear that they laughed at Cannes when the characters said "QUICK! We must find a library!"

So would I!

You might try the Historical Novel Society. They have a free newsletter (to which you can subscribe), free discussion lists,a magazine which aims to review every new historical novel in the US or the UK, and annual conferences.

Here's the page to join them:

Genre fiction's more accepting of gay characters/themes on the whole from what I've seen. But good for you! I avoided that anthology since I'm not a natural in sci-fi, but I'll see if I can get something written for the Lesbian Sleuths antho (that'll be my way of stepping outside my comfort zone). All in good time, though.

Lesbian sleuths! Now that could work, especially if you look at it from a Howard Hawks perspective, so many of his women were so butch!

I heard it on "Have I got news for you" then they went on to say that in the real world it wouldn't do them any good, because they'd have to show 2 forms of ID to open an account....

THREE edits all in all, this one is a fine tune, and the last one is by the publisher/owner herself, where she double checks and resolves any unresolvable issues.

It's a lot, but I suppose it shows their determination to the product!

I did indeed laugh at that part in the movie. I also laughed at this exchange:

"Oh, do you have an eidetic memory?"
"Not really, but I remember everything I see."

I'm actually trying to finish a story for that same anthology. I'm really, really hoping to finish it this weekend so that I have some time to get some feedback before I have to mail it out. And the story worries me, because... *cringe* I just know that someone will describe it as "Brokeback Mountain in space."

And yeah, I wouldn't say that there are any specifically homo-friendly markets, but that most of the pro mags are equally accepting of it. There was a gay main character in a story in F&SF last month. It was a really cute story, actually. :)

Nod nod. I'm also very aware of any "non-porn gay stories" will be accused of BBM bandwagon jumping - which is of course ridiculous.

Good luck with yours! I very much looking forward to reading it!

I'd love to know more about your boys too!! There's no reason why you can't use those characters in another story - lots of writers revisit the same worlds and characters in subsequent short stories.
