Large Hadron Collider!  Who gives these people permission to DO things like this?  "only 1 in 50 million chance of creating a black hole" eh? Well that's about the SAME fucking odds as winning the Euro lottery and some bugger wins that.

Shall we have a party on Tuesday just in case?  Partay like it's 1999?

Weeeeeeell, get sucked into a Black Hole or die slowly and painfully of earth destruction bit by bit. I think the black hole's a lot cooler. ;-)

Oh, and permission? Humanity is like: "oh, hey, we can RESEARCH this." "Oh, yeah, wow, cooool! We can actually DO this."

All in unison: "LET'S DO IT!!!"

And the end of the world is nigh, but hey-ho, it could be researched and thus it had to be. Eternal curiosity, did that kill the cat or didn't it?

There's a Jurassic Park quote by Malcolm that I can't quite remember correctly "you spent so much time working out if you COULD, you didn't stop to think about whether you should" or something like that.

Well that just gives me a reason not to write anything else until Thursday.

And I've got to go and grovel to the unemployment on Tuesday. Perhaps I could use the upcoming LHC as an excuse?

Ohhhh, I have to teach on Wednesday, perhaps that means I don't actually have to prepare the session? YAY!!!

I am not sure if the unemployment peeps accept that excuse, though. I might be wrong, but ...

Ah, just that they were talking about the Black Hole Machine. Also, Catch Up On Demand is your friend if you have succumbed to evil virgin media (I have succumbed, for they are cheap and give me internet).

You're not a mathematician, are you? Two completely different types of probability at work here.

They are not going to create a black hole.

My spouse has a MS in Physics and a PhD in math, and concurs. We'll all be here next week. It's the politicians we need to worry about.

Having grown up under the 4 minute warning (like yourself and many others) I've ALWAYS partied like tomorrow might be the end of the world. Or maybe the next day, or possibly the one after that.

Most mornings I've wished it was.

"Most mornings I've wished it was."

Ain't that the truth. I remember the 80s well, growing up on the Continent it was all about "The Russians are coming!!!" (and how right they were, they own LJ now *snerk*)

Even if it does end up creating a black hole it won't happen until some time in October anyway.

And it's not like they haven't done it (or something incredibly similar) before, and as we're all still here I think it's safe :P

(Unless of course the last time did cause the world to end, in which case it turns out that the afterlife has livejournal!)

It wasn't much of a consolation when Shog explained this to me, but he says that the black holes that might be created would be incredibly small and sink almost at once into the earth's crust—where they'd eat away at it.

Yeah, I know; it's not comforting! But he also says that it would be a few hundred thousand years before the earth would feel the effects. Still. Not cool!
