Quick Question:

Does anyone have any resources regarding Dutch accents? As in English spoken in a Dutch accent? Bearing in mind this is 17th century England. I don't want to write the dialect, obviously- but I want to incorporate speech patterns to make it clear that he's Dutch, not English.

If all else fails, I'll use Pennsylvanian Deutsch, which won't be very accurate, but I'd rather use Dutch if I can.

Do you want to listen to a Dutch man speaking in English? As for Dutch of 17th century I have no idea. Edwin Van der Sar is a football player of the Manchester United. I've watched his interview and he sounds...very Dutch!

Basically the person must find difficulty to pronounce "g"(in Dutch it's pronounced like "ch"), "v"(f) and so on. When he says "Thank you", it may sound like "Dank youu".

*giggling* yes - exactly. Trouble is I don't want to bog the reader down with the accent (oh WHY did I make him Dutch?) but only to leave a flavour of it -he may very well end up sounding like V.Helsing. argh! It's too late now to change him to English.

Penn. deutsch is actually German... you might ask ozreison about this--she's got a Dutch friend, has been to the Netherlands, and is learning the language.

Yes - I know that's German, that's why I wrote Pennysylvanian Deutsch, rather than Pennsylvanian Dutch and said that it wouldn't be accurate!

I can hook you up with someone whose first language is Dutch. She might be more useful for vetting accuracy of a draft than helping guide you at the beginning.

Her second language is American English. I dunno how much of a problem that is.
