There's an interesting series on the TV this week - "Murder Most Famous" sort of Celebritity NaNo - Six celebrities have to write a novel under the tutelage of Minette Walters - and each day one of them gets axed.  I think the winner actually gets the book published.  But it is interesting to see Walters' comments and advice.  I liked all the stuff she didn't, which says more about me, than her!!  Specially as she's the best-seller...

I watched Joss Whedon's Dollhouse this morning. I admit that I quite enjoyed it--I'll certainly continue to see how it pans out. I don't think that Eliza Dushku was the best choice for the role--we've seen enough of her, frankly, with Faith and Tru Calling--and she just isn't the actress that I am guessing that the part is going to need, if she's going to assume a different personality each week.  Some of my friends disliked it intensely, but I suppose I'm just not a feminist in that way. It's just TV.  I think that it's supposed to be slightly unsettling--what they are doing in the organisation is wrong--and I'm assuming that it will be working towards Echo finding out gradually what's happening to her, and the policeman gradually getting clues and evidence as to what is going on.

And while I'm persiflaging--this is one of my favourite adverts, and making a welcome comeback recently. It's just so.. Napoleonic!

not sure about Doll house - may give it a look on your reccomendation (we like similar things)... did you see Being Human on sunday? Just OMG!!!

I love the advert too - but mostly for "cold-dude's" little kick at the end. So cute!

It is a creepy concept, but I like that--of course it's full of "beautiful people" but that seems to be all Hollywood can do these days.

I love the advert; Napoleonic, yes- but also quintessentially British. :o)

Just had a peek at Murder most Famous on iPlayer - interesting. I may try and watch a whole episode tomorrow, if it's on all week. (Won't get home from work 'til 10 tonight, so no TV for me!)

I agree with your comments on Dollhouse, and especially the tone of your comments. Eliza Dushku does seem oddly lightweight in the casting, but perhaps that subliminally enhances the doll-like quality of the role? I'm not in love with the show but I did quite enjoy the first episode, and look forward to more.

Beecham's All-In-One? This begs the question: Is this the same company founded by (the great conductor) Sir Thomas Beecham's father? The one that made a fortune with Beecham's Little Liver Pills?

I enjoyed Dollhouse, too! And perhaps I'm biased because I find Eliza Dushku hot, but I thought she played well the three different personalities in the first episode. Especially Ms Penn. Though, admittedly, as Caroline in the beginning she reminded quite a lot of Faith.

I never liked Dushku much - she's not a character actor - she was the same in Tru as she was as Faith and apart from her zombie state she was very similiar in all her roles in this, too. Seems a shame, but he does seem to use the same people over and over.

It was a bit confusing at first, because I didn't know what it was about in advance, which I like to do, but I find the idea interesting!

Sadly, despite the strength of some of his writing, Whedon seems to have a love of putting lightweight women in heavyweight roles. That central notion - that a vampire-slayer is a young slip of a girl - was the basic premise of Buffy and suited him well. But the promise (and development) I thought I saw in his writing in Firefly doesn't show in the least in Dollhouse: it's still an unsophisticated young girl who supernaturally (or by whatever science-magic Dollhouse uses) is given strength but not widosm beyond the norm. Even Sierra, with firepower blazing at the end of the first episode, was no Kara Thrace or Sarah Connor - she was another underweight woman without a core personality.

I liked the first episode of Dollhouse but I'm not sure how good I feel about it.

I haven't seen it but yes, thank you. Faith was somehow iconic which led to her actress being very overrated.

Joss tends to treat his female characters well, at least as far as I can recall (and of course, only in my opinion), so I'm willing to trust him and I think you're right on this:

I thought Eliza did a decent job in the first episode...but there are so many actors I love who are deemed "bad actors" by the majority, that I know my judgment can't be trusted on this. ;)
