Murder He Rewrote
Apr. 2nd, 2009 02:15 pmYes, it’s derivative, but I’m LOVING “Castle”—I don’t think that Nathan Fillion is bad in anything I’ve ever seen him in, and while he’s not exactly a “character actor” he’s a damned good actor all the same. I love the set up, I adore his mother. *adores adores adores* – she’s what I want to be when I grow up. (shut up) I also like that – Unlike Jessica Fletcher, Castle doesn’t make the police look like idiots all the time. *smooshes it*
My radio interview has been cancelled—the journo has lost his job at the paper (I think, it was early, and the line wasn’t very clear) but he has kept his job at the radio, but he needs to reschedule. I’m hoping this is the truth and not the owners thinking that gay romance isn’t suitable for their station. Well, we’ll see in a couple of weeks!
I posted a discussion this morning about historical fiction on The Macaronis which riffs off a post I read this morning on Reading the Past and whether historical fiction needs by definition to have real historical characters and or be based around real historical events. Hmmm. Discuss.

Date: 2009-04-02 02:40 pm (UTC)Unfortunately, it airs at the same time as Chuck which is my #2 show right now. (#1 being Supernatural.) (#3 being Project Runway Canada.)
That's the show about the crime novellist? Interesting discussion! (And doesn't writing historical fiction with real historical characters strike anyone else as being rather like fanfiction?)

Date: 2009-04-02 07:46 pm (UTC)Castle is fun. The Mother is the best character I think, but everyone's pretty good, and no-one's clueless, which makes a nice change.

Date: 2009-04-02 09:36 pm (UTC)Now he is considered an asset by the NSA/CIA who have each assigned him one guardian. The NSA agent is played by Adam Baldwin (Jayne from Firefly) and the CIA agent is played by Yvonne Strahovski.
It's a bit over the top sometimes but Zachary Levi, who plays Chuck, is so charming and charismatic (and a goof) that it works. Loads of nods to nerds/geeks of all flavours.
There is sexual subtext between Chuck and just about everyone in his life and they play on it.
From the wiki: The Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan wrote that "the show pays attention to the mechanics of storytelling and doesn't just try to coast on the comedy." She continued, "[Given] the level of attention paid to all those other things—emotion, suspense, plotting, character—Chuck ends up being one of the TV scene's greatest pleasures at the moment."[35] Television Without Pity's Angel Cohn finds Chuck to be a well-written show, saying "it features some of the smartest and most quick-witted dialogue on TV". He praises the ensemble cast and notes "while the first season was good, this show has really hit its stride in its second season."[36] Poniewozik with Time magazine said that with the second season the "new episodes quickly jump back in, with higher stakes and sharper jokes."[37]
Also, I find Zach Levi attractive. Love that he's rocking the curls for this show.
If you don't mind spoilers, this video takes all the tango bits of Chuck vs. The Tango and puts them together. You might like the part where Chuck's soon to be brother-in-law, Captain Awesome, teaches him how to tango. (Srsly, Captain Awesome is half-naked so often why do they bother with wardrobe for him?)
It's not everyone's cup of tea but I find it to be an enjoyable show.
