I know nothing about the stockmarket.

I know nothing about model trains

I know nothing about train spotting (called Rail Fanning in the US which is infinitely sexier imho) (if just as geekie)

So what the fuck am I doing, writing about a stockbroker who falls in love with a train enthusiast?

HMMMM?????

No wonder people write Sci-fi/fantasy. When you create your own world, no-one is going to question your world are they? Oooh no. Kilbnixes aren't blue....

Hee, I do things like that ALL the time. Why do we do it to ourselves?

I don't know... It was bad enough when I picked the English Civil War, but this... It's only 1960 so I thought - well that won't be too difficult, but I find I have to be just as careful as if I was writing in 1642!

If you can pull of the civil war and witch hunting, this'll be a piece of piss. Anyway, NO ONE WILL CARE because of all the hot UST :D

Rail fanning sounds like some kind of kinky sex move. I'll fan your rail any day baby. RAWR.
And also:
When you create your own world, no-one is going to question your world are they?
Excuse me? Are you saying that no one questions JKR? This from the woman who has questioned JKR so much she has now stopped bothering because she knows the answer will be a total fuck-up?

To a point, that's true, though look at the criticism JKR gets for being so illogical with her magical system, etc, and in SF, especially there's a lot of research to do to make an alien race or an alien planet realistic. For my SF project I've been reading a lot about astronomy and the distance between objects in space and theories on how future spacecraft and artificial gravity and the possible long term effects of space travel on the human body. I'm not sure the stock market is any worse than that.

Train geeks are very scary. I know more than a few, and they make the re-enactor anoraks look like normal people.

Hee thank you!

Ah but JKR is an IDIOT who doesn't have any respect for her own work, let alone the fans!!

I applaud you heartily, but if/when I ever get around to writing that Sci-fi romp, I am NOT going to be researching physics. My space travel is going to along the line of the famous convention quote

"How do the inertial dampeners work?"

"Rather well, thank you"

Yes, with the technical stuff, that's the approach I'm taking, but for example, if I want my ship to travel from Mars to the asteroid belt, and then from there to Jupiter, I need to have reasonable consistent travel times. It's like in Thaw when I was working out how long non-motorized travel would take, only with larger numbers.

*raises hands* I don't know anything about that either x_x;; If I were to ever write stories that sets place in the real world... I'm probably only gonna stick with what I know...which is not a lot unfortunately, but thankfully music, for an example, is a very broad fucking subject! ^_^
